The model minority is a stereotype built against Asian Americans who are preserved to be trying to be a model to society as they obtain high socioeconomic success. This comes from the idea of Americans thinking that people of Asian descent are trying to take all of their jobs. This stereotype in itself is dangerous in because it does not hold itself entirely true and it creates hatred and racism targeted towards all Asian Americans no matter their connection.
In the article, journalist Viet Thanh Nguyen stated “the end of Asian Americans only happens with the end of racism and capitalism.” This means that they will never be seen as citizens if they are continued to tortured with racism which dehumanizes them alongside capitalism. In Asian American history, cheap asian labor was benefiting American businesses and Asians were thus considered a a threat to white working Americans as they were blamed for destroying American businesses, showing the extent to which their alienation source from.
This article ultimately reveals that minority groups face the same struggles in America as Asian Americans are not the only ones. They are all pushed to the bottom of the social class, there are stereotypes held against them, and have faced racism. The fact is, we are all the same, humans with equal rights who struggle as a minority. The biggest problem America faces and even between minority groups is that we still see race.
This article also touches on the fact that most immigrants did not ask to be American citizens. A great number of them were brought for cheap labor and sadly their future generations are considered to be threats to America when all they want to do is prove their existence or worth in America, showcasing their excellence and living the lives their ancestors couldn’t.
As minority groups, they should not be against each other but for each other because they understand each others struggles and should be encouraging exactly what equality should mean in America between them and that includes not seeing race.
