Viet Thangh Nguyen’s article “Asian Americans Are Still Caught in the Trap of the ‘Model Minority’ Stereotype. And It Creates Inequality for All” discusses the notion of “model minority”. The phrase “model minority” refers to a minority group or individual who is stereotyped as being more successful than other minority groups or people. According to Farzana Nayani “The model minority myth is a historical concept that was used to define Asian Americans as a model community of foreigners who had succeeded in achieving the American dream.” This label is highly dangerous since it promotes a stereotype that is harmful to Asian Americans. The stereotype divides Asian Americans from other people of color in the United States because Asian Americans are portrayed as fortunate, rich, and not in need of assistance or care. Ngyuen wrote “To be Asian American is therefore paradoxical, for being Asian American is both necessary and insufficient. Being Asian American is necessary, the name and identity giving us something to organize around, allowing us to have more than “minor feelings.” The model minority concept devalues minorities’ identities by compelling people to include the phrase “American,” since it places a greater focus on “minor feelings.” Because of the disparity racism and capitalism have on Asian Americans, Nguyen writes that “the end of Asian Americans only happens with the end of racism and capitalism.” Asian Americans are stereotyped as permanent foreigners who come to the United States to pursue the American ideal, preventing them from ever becoming “true” Americans. Because racism and capitalism will never end, Nguyen is implying that inequality within the Asian American community will never end. Before I read this essay, I had no idea what a “model minority” was. It simply demonstrates how people are classified based on their distinctions. As a minority, we should help one another since we are all going through the same difficulties and should ensure equality.
I also didn’t know what a model minority was before reading this. The article opened my eyes to how a label like model minority could create even more inequality in our already unequal society.
You weaved pieces of the article really well with your blog! I’m happy that you learned about the concept of model minority since its such an important aspect of racism/ Great response!
