Throughout the video, Trevor Noah mentions something about how society is made by the people who abid a social contract. A social contract is what gives society order and a community to call home. Recently, there has been an event where society almost broke its social contract because of another event. Citizens believed that if they don’t agree with the people upholding the contract, they have the right to go against the contract and break it. Trevor (I think because I had trouble understanding it) believes that looting and rioting are not the way to go to express your views because of how people will think about your community. The people with power will only think that your people are a threat to society itself.
To become a citizen of a society, you are required to follow certain rules. By following those rules, it prevents chaos and anarchy in society. It brings peace and order. The question lies on what happens if society treats you like you don’t belong in that society? That is what protesting is all about, to show that you disagree with how society handles its people. Recently, there has been a major protest against police brutality against African Americans. They felt like they were treated differently and wanted to spread the word. By doing that, they can make their own communities that support their beliefs. Instead of rioting and violence, the people want to use the example of the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. doesn’t want to show society that they are also part of the society as well and not a threat. They don’t want to be treated as outsiders and want to become citizens of society. It is also worth noting that once riots break out, people believe that they can take out people without power(basically people who have nothing to do with the event) and get innocent people involved.
(This is late… I also had a bit of trouble understanding the points he is coming across, but I understood some parts.)
I really enjoyed your discussion of what makes someone a citizen in a society. Its truly a terrible thing that the people with power in a society break their societal contract and in doing so make things worse for the people that don’t have the societal power that they do. That is why a society must protest and demand fairness in these situations.
