In the Trevor Noah clip, he emphasizes the term “social contract” and describes it as when we humans tend to treat each other with the same principles. This “contract” is supposed to lead humans to have an “agreement” that sets a good behavior with equality among each other. However, this “contract” has been broken. A clear example of this, is the abuse that African Americans are dealing with till this day in the United States. Trevor Noah gives as an example the death of George Floyd, explaining how the killers were not punished right after the crime they commited. Because even though they are police officers, killing a human being is a crime no matter who you are. Equality is something us humans don’t completely follow because some of us see the need to look at others as less for absurd reasons. These absurd reasons include race, styles, being unstable economically and more.
In the documentary “ I Am Not Your Negro” James Baldwin shows the history of Racism in America through his experience and his memories of three important civil rigth leaders: Malcom X, Martin Luther King Jr, and Medgar Evers. These three leaders shared one common objective: to achieve equality. However, the procedure of each one vary. To start with, Malcom X procedure included violence, he believed it was necessary for people of color to aggressively protest for equal rights. On the other side, Medgar Evers organized protests, economic boycotts, and registration drives. To end with, Martin Luther King was more peaceful. An example of this is his famous speech “I Have a Dream” made in 1963. Baldwin’s idea was to demonstrate the different ways that activists did to achieve the same cause. In conclusion, both the clip and documentary show how people from the 1990s till today are trying to achieve equality. And even though times have changed, protests are still on and inequality is still alive.
I liked how you summarized both the Trevor Noah clip and James Baldwin’s “I Am Not Your Negro.” Both films have taught us something valuable.
