A society under a social contract has an agreement to the laws of the society. For a person to be a full citizen in a society, they have to have documentation and rights in the society and must obey the laws. In todays society, black people are still on the outskirts as America alienates them.
James Baldwin has depicted the lives of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and Medgar Evers who are some of the most influential black leaders in the black lives matter movement. They heavily speak on the history of black people, their present, and their future. They all acknowledge, as well as Baldwin, the devastation that black people have been going through and aimed to make a difference. This strive was so huge that they were seen as a threat to “White America” and were killed. James Baldwin gracefully has been allowed help to tell the history, uplift the black community and see through that the efforts are continued until the day that it can truly be said that black people are free.
Watching this film today makes me think back to when I first saw it. Then, I didn’t realize that this was still a fight. The problems that the black community is facing today is more than just racism: it’s the actions that follow it. In the film, we see the riots, the brutality, the anti protestors, the noise of racial slurs, and the discrimination.
With what I believed to be the world’s greatest protest in 2020 really proved that the fight for equality was far from over and that made the reality more believable. The history of black people enslaved in context is always seen as deep history but that history stems from then to yesterday and then on till the fight is won.
Your words, “Black people are still on the outskirts as America alienates them” really caught my eye because that’s the reality and it’s what we continue to see happening in America. And I agree because while slavery is considered history today, we see the ways in which the oppression has lingered today, like through police brutality. While the fight for equality and justice for Blacks is evidently ongoing, I too long for the day when the fight is won.
