When we think of an agreement between the government and its people, that usually means that the government is taking the people’s opinions to find a middle ground. However, what if you gave away some of your freedom so you can receive some benefits from the government: that’s what we call the social contract. Trevor Noah criticizes the government regarding social contracts since there are many instances where the government does not uphold its promise. According to the theory of social contract, in order to become a full citizen, one must oblige to all rules, laws, and established morals based on a governing body. What this simply means is that in order to be part of a certain society you need to adapt to follow their rules, or you won’t accept as one. In this instance, this led to many inequalities in society yet not much was done to prevent them due to social contract.

James Baldwin, a civil rights activist, created the film “I am not your negro” to describe the life of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Medgar Evers. These three people are all popular and famous figures in the civil rights movement, and between all of them they had one main goal. It was for black people to gain equality and justice, the reason I believe James Baldwin chose them is that they were the ones who led the black community and gave them a voice in the world. It was them that gave people the courage to stand up for themselves and not be in silence for the rest of their lives.

After watching the film, it gave me a clearer view of how ruthless a society could be and how a mob mentality can grow to become state-wide. The ability to visualize how people treated colored people felt morally wrong and just makes me question what led to people to these types of behaviors.
