In the film, “The Great Hack” gives insight into the inner workings of how data is used by companies and organizations such as Facebook. The way that big data works are that they take information on individuals and then sells them to other companies. Facebook is able to do this through surveys that users complete as well as the interactions these users have on the platform. This allows the company to advertise to these users using the data from their interests. That is why sometimes when you are looking for something you suddenly start to get a lot of ads for that product. One way in which ads were used by former President Trump in an attempt to influence the voters in the election. This allowed a lot of Americans to view a lot of campaign ads that were being used to persuade the public. This is the topic that interested Prof. Carroll with the Cambridge Analytica case because it is a recent example of the power that people can have through influencing people through the internet. Luckily, all of this information made its way to the public.

Honestly, in this modern-day society, where everything is slowly becoming digital there is little to no room for privacy. Bank accounts, social media, and even internet access can be tracked or hacked which makes that data prone to being hacked. However, with almost all companies and industries shifting to digital storage, it is almost inevitable to be on the internet. Online privacy is dead and that’s because all of this digital data that is left behind can be hacked and someone can access and steal information from anyone. Big data leaks from companies such as T-Mobile can lead to millions of people’s information being leaked.

  1. I agree with you that this idea of privacy is slowly eroding due to technological advances. someone always has access to you as long as you put your information online.
