We are all guilty of believing what we are taught simply because of our naiveness, the fear of being wrong haunts all of us. The speaker of “what reading slowly taught me about writing” described reading as a way to pace life. When she said, “as technology moves us faster and faster through time and space, it seems to feel like the story is getting pushed out of the way,” it’s a symbolization of reading compared to our way of life. For instance, we are taught to read a book fast, deciphering every word as quickly as possible but doing so causes us to disengage in the story the book is telling. This is just like reality, where everything is so fast that we don’t take the time to cherish what’s going on in our lives. This can be very relatable; I remember times when books enticed me so much that I would spend hours reading to get to the ending. However, life became different from ten years ago as technology became more advanced. The ability to find any resource or information you want with a click of a button became so accessible compared to when reading the physical text was the only option. The speaker emphasizes “savoring the story” heavily in her presentation, and it was a way for her to feel like she is part of the story and create an image in her mind. It can also be said that this is how she enjoyed her life, her passion for reading taught her how life should be for her. Her presentation also gave me a different perspective of my life. Instead of treating life as a race, it’s time I take things down a notch and enjoy what’s around me.

I really like that you relate the ted talk to life itself instead of just limiting it to reading. Nicely done, you were certainly thinking outside of the box.
