English has always been a class I have a love and hate relationship with. I migrated to New York from Ecuador in 2014 when I was just an 11 year old.  Adapting to a new country with a different language, a lot of different cultures, and just a very distinct environment to live around.  Starting school here  felt very weird since the only words I knew were “ hey”, “thank you” and “ may I use the bathroom.” After my first year of school here which was 6th grade, I passed the ESL test on my first trial. This meant after my first year I got moved from an ESL class to a regular English class which was a fast transition in 3 years from taking all my classes in Spanish to taking all my classes in English with language extra help to being in a regular English class. This was very difficult for me especially since I struggled with grammar even in my home language so trying to learn a whole new grammar setting with different types of letter pronunciations. Even till today, my pronunciations for some words are not perfect, it has been improving a lot every year but I feel it could be improved even more. And now going into college I want to get the best out of myself and be completely ready for the workforce. In this course I want my reading and writing to improve. I want to be able to write more professionally since I feel like I’m still at a pretty basic level. I work better when there’s feedback given to me constantly so I know where to improve in the future. Some obstacles I could have in the class is that when I read long texts I have difficulty in focusing and finding sense or connecting the reading. In addition, when it comes to managing time I have made myself a calendar with things I need to do since past years of school. I have been a procrastinator and it has affected me not just in my grades but personal life and I really want just to improve as a person. When it comes to activities outside of school I told myself to put school first in my list of responsibilities, that’s why I found a job where I could choose my schedule (uber eats). I really hope I can gain the most from this not just education wise since learning a language more and looking at things from a different perspective could have a great impact on me personally.

  1. I can definitely relate coming to the United States at such a young age, we both had to learn english the hard way by taking supplemental ESL classes. However, by seeing where we are now we should be proud of ourselves what we accomplished.
