The author of “Death of the Private Self” asserts unequivocally that Facebook has destroyed the barrier between one’s online presence and their private life. Harrison portrays this as a major issue by citing the statistic: “Nearly 30% of women lied about doing something when they were really home alone, and 20% lied about their holiday activities or their jobs.” (Harrison) Our information is just floating around the internet, and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. It’s a terrifying thought that becomes even scarier when linked to the Netflix documentary “The Great Hack.” Imagine all that information now being sold to bigger corporations to use and manipulate, all because we carelessly feed it our location, our web searches, our location on social media, and other information. However, we believe that we are not exposing information, but rather that it is being sold to companies for a profit behind our backs. Ever texted or talked about needing a certain product and had that very same product start popping up as your ads? It’s not a strange coincidence, these companies are deliberately trying to profit from us, ignoring our privacy. This isn’t the only thing I noticed after watching the documentary; we sometimes get calls from people we never gave our phone number to, and that information was sold or shared with them, and now they’re trying to persuade us to buy something or give us false information. I, myself, have received these scam calls frequently, maybe even once a week or so and it scares me to think that my parents might pick up these calls and give in to the scam since they don’t know better.
Prof. Carroll specifically references the Cambridge Analytica case in this documentary. He chooses this case as a recent example that his watchers can reference since this Presidential election was particularly important. Apparently, Cambridge Analytica was a company involved in the 2016 presidential election, when they stole information from millions of Facebook users in order to assist the Trump campaign with advertising. All of this information eventually made its way to the public and assisted in informing the public about what happened to their information.
This topic is very concerning because these big corporations have access to people’s information and can use ads to target certain groups of people. Especially because everyone uses the internet at some point so everyone is at risk of being monitored.
