In the article “Asian Americans Are Still Caught in the Trap of the ‘Model Minority’ Stereotype. And It Creates Inequality for All” there are many interpretations of being the model minority. First off the Author is from Vietnam himself so he is speaking from his own personal experience. This makes the article have more authentication and has a deep meaning. His story is very similar to others in which escaping from communism was very common, leaving their lives from the old country and starting fresh in America. With one goal in mind: The American Dream to raise a successful family and live the happiest life. One of the interpretations of the model minority is to be “to be invisible in most circumstances because we are doing what we are supposed to be doing, like my parents, until we become hypervisible because we are doing what we do too well” This label is dangerous because it creates a stereotype. Stereotypes can evolve and develop into prejudice and discrimination. The question who does it serve can be viewed potentially as a trick question because who does it not serve? It serves everyone one from every race. There is prejudice with every race, every religion and every culture which certainly affects everyone in their own way as a whole and or individually. Everything has been given a prejudice when entered in the world; it’s just the perception we as humans view them in. This essay does not challenge my view on minority groups in the US because I was taught at a young age to view everyone as equals. Also was taught through personal experience, realized and matured that if people start to discriminate against you they probably are facing problems within themselves and you have to learn to block the hate from outside to be comfortable with yourself from the inside.

  1. I like how you were able to talk about the authors connection and how yourself, you were raised with such awareness. On the point of you saying that discrimination that people may have towards others can be from their own personal problems but most times discrimination is pure hatred towards other minorities and their way of life, especially within ignorant people.

  2. Daniel, you did a good job at briefly explaining that this essay does not challenge your view point on minority groups by emphasizing how you were raised and how your personal encounter shapes your perception.
