We use rhetoric everyday trying to convince ourselves and others to make basic life decisions. Rhetoric consist of appeals to values, credibility, and reason taking the speaker and audience into careful consideration. When appealing to values, we look for what the audience might find important. It’s more of an emotional approach when trying to sell something. Credibility refers to whom is speaking and how well they can be trusted with being an influence on my decision. The appeal to reason is about what is logical and our prior knowledge on the specific subject.  We can often see rhetoric being used in ads in order to sell a product. In a Nutella commercial the cast consists of three kids and a mother in which they are all getting ready in the morning and the mom is worrying about breakfast. Given the plot one could assume that the audience is parents with young children and the speaker is, the mom, also a parent. The speaker first comments on her hectic morning  and how she can always use an extra hand to find time to feed her children breakfast. The speaker says this in hopes that her audience, other parents, could relate . This is when she introduces Nutella as a product that makes her mornings a lot easier as a quick, delicious, and nutritious way to make sure her kids eat breakfast. As she goes on she then appeals to credibility by saying,’ this is something that your kids would want to eat!’ as she sets the Nutella sown the creditable resource, her kids, stop what their doing and run to the table to eat. Lastly she goes on to state the health facts  of Nutella, this being the speakers logical appeal to how It’s simple and healthy. It is clear how rhetoric is used in ads and commercials but it is also interesting how you’re probably thinking about buying Nutella after watching the commercial.

  1. For starters, as a person who loves Nutella… you’ve got me hooked! But I will say that I remember seeing this exact commercial a few years back and recall that prompting the start of my Nutella obsession. Coming from a big family, the advertisement really appealed to me and made me think about how much easier it would be to have this for breakfast during hectic mornings; besides it also being delish. But after reminiscing and rewatching this advertisement, best believe I just ran to check if we have Nutella.
    Update: We do 🙂
