This advertisement, “Break Free” for the brand Adidas, is an appeal to the audience’s emotions (pathos), otherwise representing an appeal to “values” as I understood it from the article. The advertisement revolves around a retired marathon runner who lives in a nursing home and is struggling to find happiness living this way, emphasizing how persistent his discontent is. When he stumbles upon his old Adidas running shoes and marathon clothing, he tries to go on runs, in which he’s constantly met with the constraining nurses. With the help of his fellow residents in the home, he’s cheered off to escape and is finally able to run in his Adidas shoes again. Being able to run in these shoes again allowed him to escape the tedium and monotony of his life in the nursing home, combining the feeling of freedom that running granted him and freedom from his restrictive life. Full of emotion, this advertisement pushes the audience to want to feel the runner’s elation at being able to run in these shoes again. As for myself, I took the subject’s circumstances as motivation for myself and the rest of the audience, to take action and do what we can, while we can, as we still have the freedom and time to do so. I feel that having the ability to “break free” is something we might take for granted, but this advertisement revealed that beyond the Adidas running shoes, with the right amount of motivation and the right support system, you can do just that. Being part of this audience and given the story behind the advertisement, I can comfortably say that I was moved and emotionally appealed to. I’ve especially taken this advertisement as a pathway to “break free”, and as a sign to not give up, reach for what I long for, and simply keep running.
