Gour Nitai Temple (Blog #2)

Gour Nitai temple, is a temple that is located in Brooklyn, New York specifically at 128 33rd Street between 3rd and 4th Avenue. It was first created in 2000 by Dipak Das and lots of other followers of the temple. It has been eleven years since the temple was first created and now has over 200 devotees that come to the temple for their religious function. In relative to other temples, you can say that this is a “small” temple, since the space is not that big.  The whole temple is probably around 1000 sf. It has an empty space where devotees can sit and worship facing the gods which are placed on a stage, and kitchen for all the food to be prepared, you should see all this in the pictures provided.

The temple has functions for every major holiday in the Hindu religion and also every two weeks on Saturday there is a Gita Path (The Bhagavad Gita reciting). This is the temple that my family and I attend and have been attending ever since I was twelve years old. Of course we go to other temples as well, but our family has created a connection with this temple, and with the other devotees that go there as well. There is a community that this temple has formed and through this community we have a system of how the temple is run. Everyone takes turn to be the one to sponsor that weekends celebration of the Gita reciting and help with the preparation of food and paying for the food as well. Together the devotees of Gour Nitai Temple have become a small community within Brooklyn, New York.
