Baruch has a plethora of resources that are available for students to use. Some of them include, but are not limited to, the honors lounge the writing center, the Starr Career Development Center, and the Newman Library.

The library is probably the most important resource at Baruch. The study rooms can be used to study as a group for upcoming exams. They can also be utilized as meeting rooms for groups to congregate and work on projects. Recently, my community service project group met in a study room to discuss what to do for the project and what each member will contribute. This project allows for teamwork, which is an important component of our futures. It is through teamwork that we learn to listen to others and to state our opinions in a respectful manner.

My group’s community service project is to help tutor elementary school students and to aid in a college workshop at Adelphi Academy. I have appreciated the help I received when I needed help in those same situations. Community service is about giving back. The opportunities I had when I was younger should also be experienced by others. Doing this community service project is my way of giving back.

The community service project is not the only thing I am busy with at Baruch. I have also tried to take advantage of the large number of clubs and organizations at Baruch. The first and only club that I have consistently went to is Archery Club. Because archery practice is on the weekend, I am able to participate without being too busy during the week. It is my first time handling a bow and it’s something new that I learned at Baruch. I’m enjoying my time at the Archery Club, especially when I get a bullseye. It makes feel like I’ve accomplished something. Week after week, I have improved in my accuracy and precision. I began with the short-range targets and have since advanced onto the mid-range targets. I’m not up to the level of the long-range targets yet, but I’m slowly working my way up. As I reflect back on my experience in the club, I realize the progress I’ve made and I start to feel giddy with happiness.

The Honors Program at Baruch aims to create and promote future leaders. Participation in the community will expand our views of the world. We learn to respect each other more through working with different types of people. We witness different types of situations that make us realize the injustice of the world. Along with that revelation, we try to come up with solutions that will benefit these underserved communities.

My role is to take the skills I’ve learned at Baruch and apply them to real world settings where I am able to give back to the community. Doing community service allows us to get the most out of our education. It is also serves as a learning experience for us. It allows us to discover where our strengths and where our weaknesses lie. It allows us to establish connections and relationships with others. It allows us to realize that we are part of a larger community. The worst thing in the world is to feel alone. Working with others allows us to realize that there are others out there for us.

Our communities helped to shape who we are and our success is a result of that help. We should give back and continue to provide the type of aid that they have given us. We cannot just focus on ourselves as individuals, but what is for the greater good. I was lucky to have been born into a life where I have opportunities. Not everyone has the same opportunities as us and we should give back to the community so that others can experience the same.

For the most part, I can say that my life has been very sheltered. My parents have provided everything I’ve ever needed for me. Even so, every child must grow up and face the world. At eighteen years old, I have only made a few steps outside of the safe haven my parents have provided. The first step occurred when I was given a student Metrocard after my family had moved to Brooklyn. Because I refused to transfer schools, I had to ride the subway for forty minutes to get to school by myself. On the first day I rode the train to school, I did not get off on the right stop to transfer. Luckily, I was able to figure out what had gone wrong. I was able to correct my mistake and go off on my way. When my parents realized that I could do certain things by myself without them, they began to let me go more places without them. I was even able to stay out later than I had before. I cannot say that I am truly independent because I still need my parents. I also cannot say that I took the first few steps voluntarily because the circumstances at the time had forced me to. All I know is that the push from my parents has helped me a great deal by instilling the values of responsibility.

As I adjust into college life, I hope to find out what it is that I am passionate about. It is difficult for me to find motivation in doing work because I do not care about what my task is, just that I complete it on time. My willingness to complete tasks fluctuates, but occasionally, there is a spark of inspiration. I want to find something I can care about, something I will not tire of. This is not something that can be guaranteed in my first semester, but it is my primary goal.
