Came across this video and found it very disturbing……who would have thought that texting while driving is more dangers than drinking and driving under the influence although both can cause the same damage. While driving and texting the video shows that the reaction time is much slower than the individual under the influence if alcohol. Its the same as talking to someone while they are texting. To me there is no way you can fully have the attention of the texter because it also obvious that sum of the information relayed to him or her would be lost in translation even though he or she she remember most of the conversation. While texting you fail to realize that time goes on and that u are in way separated yourself from the real world and unconsciously entered into a social network but at the same time, time is constantly moving and its not until you focus your attention back to the real world you realize what you have missed out on alot while you where texting.
I can relate to the idea of “texters” while driving.I am a non-driver but I often notice individuals who drive while texting. My sister has a tendency of driving while she texts on her cellphone.I usually tell her it is unsafe while she puts her life at risk, as well as others.I try my best to explain to her, the person on the other side of the conversation is more than likely, safe in his/her location.Whereas individuals are stuck in the idea of thinking a response has to be immediate. We as a society believe highly in instant gratification.Even with Facebook, or any other social networking sites if one of our friends comments on our wall, or vice versa we feel the need to respond asap.
I also asked my sister why she MUST text while driving because at times she feels there are no consequences in doing so.I find that to be insane. However, there are people who feel F.O.M.O(Fear of Missing Out). While having to travel to work each day, I can say for myself, I must say I usually answer my texts, and check my social networking sites. However, it is different for a driver to act in such ways.
A week before Christmas we got the bad news, our beloved baby sitter was killed in a car accident. She was a passenger in a car, and the driver of the other car caused the deadly accident. We don’t know what exactly happened. In many cases texting is the reason of the accident.
Please, don’t drive while you are texting. Ask all your friends and family not to do it.
The sad thing is, people would not miss out anything, if they didn’t answer a text. Usually, these conversations are not important, they are meaningless exchanges. No one texts about important things while driving. Or, if something important comes up, I am sure a person pulls over to answer it.
I know many people who are on their sell phones all the time. They check their phones in every minute whether they got something or not. One of my friends was very upset the other day, because the internet was off on her phone. She couldn’t text with her friends. I told her that your phone was still working, so called them up. Well, she was looking at me as a crazy person. When tradition phone calls became old fashioned??
Luckily texting while driving has become a widely controversial issue and law makers are taking action. According to recent law enforcement, “text messaging is banned for all drivers in 31 states and the District of Columbia. In addition, novice drivers are banned from texting in 9 states (Alabama, Indiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and West Virginia) and school bus drivers are banned from text messaging in 3 states (Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas).” http://www.iihs.org/laws/cellphonelaws.aspx It is however absolutely ludicrous that only 3 states banned text messaging by school bus drivers?! I would really hope that they have enough brain power not to, but now a days you really never know. Even looking away for just one second puts you at risk of an accident. Yet as obvious as it may seem to us that text messaging while driving is not only distracting but dangerous, others disagree. In late 2010 ABC news reported that there was a study which disagreed with crash findings due to text messaging. Researchers at the Highway Loss Data Institute reported no reduction in car crashes after texting-while-driving laws took effect. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/texting-driving-bans-make-roads-safer-study/story?id=11744804 In my opinion its simply misleading most likely due to the fact that people continue to text message regardless of law changes. Then again it makes me think, how is text messaging while driving any more or less hazardous than someone putting on mascara while driving, or eating a sandwich or even reading directions. I have personally never seen anyone get pulled over for that. I don’t understand how this is not such an obvious issue. Put your phone/makeup/food down, wait a few extra minutes and you may just increase the chances of staying alive.
