Don’t Forget to Schedule Your Tweet
This being my last blog, I wanted to discuss a service that acknowledges the growing internet dependency and social media usage. This article lists the best times to Tweet for you to get the most exposure. The website is basically an advertisement for a service called Garious which is a Tweet scheduler for professionals to market themselves and their businesses. Garious argues that Tweeting at 9 a.m. gets the most exposure because “you can target people coming to work in America and Canada’s West Coast, you can tweet to tweeple at lunch time in the East Coast, and you can have your tweets reach as far as London where Britons are calling it the end of another work day”. I, myself, do not have a Twitter account to test this out, but the article’s claim seems valid.
This started out as a useful social media tool for businesses to get their name out there, but this other Garious advertisement offers their services to social media addicts who feel that they need help with managing their time. It seems a little ironic that these internet addicts are using another online resource to control their social media obsession. Garious offers their services to “pre-schedule your tweets and other social media activities”. It seems that the future of some online services will be, strangely, along the lines of trying to curb internet addiction. In a way, Garious is a useful tool for those who spend a majority of their time marketing their business online, but could possibly be used by internet addicts who want to manage their time better by planning social media activity beforehand.

Age Keeping Up with Youth
While looking through the NY times I found this interesting article about how the older generation is trying to keep up with the younger generation. But from reading this article and to no surprise to me, the older generation purpose of getting involved with Facebook is to keep tabs on their children to make sure they are not engaging in any illegal activities or doing anything that they would not want them to do. There are a number of reasons why older people decide to joined Facebook. Some as I mentioned before joined to keep tabs on their children but there are others who joined to surprise their children or grandchildren in a good way to show that they are keeping up with our generation.
This link is interested because it is showing that even the older generation who probably five years ago could never see themselves getting involved into a social network website but now more and more people in their 50’s and 60’s are signing up for Facebook. They are even going as far as to going to classes to learn the basic in and out of social network website. When I see something like this taking place it just makes me think that just maybe after hearing about how great Facebook is for the last 5 or 6 years that you just end up succumbing to the temptation and decide to make a Facebook page just to see what is all the excitement with Facebook is about. I thin all of us is like this with something in our life. If you continue to hear everybody talk about how great something is, you are going to want to test it out at some point and that is what is taking place with the older adults and Facebook.

Fear of Missing Out
In this article written by Jenna Wortham, she is exploring the idea of the fear of missing out and how it affects us now. Are we so dependent these days that all of us who are in the social network world actually undergoes the fear of missing out issue? Do those of us who are addicted to our Facebook and twitter pages feel that if we don’t log on to our homepage for several days that we are going to be missing out on the social world and about what is taking place in our friends or followers life? I think that this much easier said than done because of all of the technology in the world today. Maybe if smartphones did not have applications on our phones for Facebook and Twitter, this would be much easier to do, but now that we are always checking our Facebook on our cell phones, I think that it is much easier to get caught up in the fear of missing out world. We always want to see what new statuses friends posted on their wall, and to see if they added any new interesting pictures for our viewing pleasure.
Maybe we are just too addicted to the social media world and always need to be in touch with that world. Jenna Wortham suggested ideas that we can do to address this situation such as hiding your phone, limiting time on social networks on the weekend, and finally to put your cell phone on silent for long periods of time. I for one actually currently do put my phone on silent and keep it far from me for several hours during my day to avoid seeing my phone blinking because I have a facebook notification or something.

Harsh Reality or Overkill?
In Old Saybrook Connecticut, a high school ran an internet safety assembly.
Yet many students felt violated and that the school had infringed on their privacy. The school used photos, tweets and status updates from freshman that were required to attend the assembly.
The school found these items because students had no idea how to protect their privacy, which is something that we have spoken about in class often. Debating the idea of protecting our Internet privacy and younger generations living in a world where everything is sharable.
The principle of the school insists “say the purpose of the assembly was to make students aware of how public their “tweets,” photos and profiles are online if their privacy settings aren’t strict enough”. The school used photos and other items that were publically accessible.
I think the students that are outraged should be learning a lesson and understanding that it is not only their friends who can access their internet personas but parents, teachers, etc. I believe the school taught its lesson on privacy in a really effective way, by showing the lack of it that so many students have.
Redefining privacy on Facebook
For my final blog, I found this article on TIME.com which captured my eyes and attention. It was very intriguing and interesting to read the many ways listed on this website as to how people relate and understand Facebook. The article titled “How Facebook is redefining Privacy” According to this article, within the next few weeks, Facebook will “officially log its 500millionth active citizen.” This makes you wonder, hmm.. “what number am I”. Just kidding, but on a serious note, it makes one wonder, how Facebook has greatly changed and altered peoples everyday lives and also how it has affected various cultures and countries around the world.
In the article, they talked about how the actual work settings relates to the actual Facebook website. It was said that “hundreds of employees work in big, open-air bullpens-without cubicle walls, there isn’t much privacy, so each desk seems like, a Facebook wall” From this, it’s obvious that these employees are practicing whatever they preached. The article also talks about Mark Zuckerberg’s idea of targeting “your likes”
Finally, they used the question ” What Voldemort Is to Harry Potter” is basically what Facebook and privacy is to society. It was mentioned that, as the years progressed, privacy has been changing and people don’t want complete privacy. In fact, they want control over what they share and what they don’t. In a sense, the comparison to Voldemort, makes me think that without Voldemort, Harry Potter would not be that interesting likewise, without Facebook, the internet would not be the same. Definitely, now we know, the internet has been changed and will not be the same like it was eight years ago.
Everyone Knows Everyone
This isn’t intended to be an official post, but I thought it was funny that an artist who has benefitted from the way information spreads over the internet (at least that’s how most of my friends have heard of him) is complaining about how connected people are because of it.
“I can’t stand,
that we’re all connected.
and I miss the days,
when I only knew my friends.
The whole world,
thinks they know all about me.
But they’ll miss the day,
when they only knew without me.
I can’t stand
without seein’ your
pretty faces.
And I miss the days.
when I was excited,
about seein the new things.
it seems so long ago.
Now we’re all,
virtually connected.
and I miss the days,
when I only knew my friends.
I can’t stand
without seein your
pretty faces.
Now we’re all
connected.
Seems so far beyond.”

Age is nothing but a number!
After reading this article in the New York Times , I kind of chuckled. The fact that there is a class called Facebook 101 is funny yet useful. This article reminded me of how we have come a very long way with technology and very quickly. Only those who are born into this fast paced technological world can know how to keep up. But what about those who are older and want to monitor their children or grandchildren access on these sites? They should have the ability to learn how to use them as well. The New York public library in the Bronx helps those individuals who show concern about monitoring the young children in their lives. I think that this class is useful for older people to learn how to use if their children are venturing out to these social sites. We all know the dangers behind these types of websites. Even the article points out such tips for the older students to learn that is typically useful for a much younger crowd. Although many of these young children would not like to be monitored so closely by their parents or grandparents, I feel like it is a relief because many of these children do not know what they get themselves into joining these sites. Facebook does not really have any way of knowing the true age of some of its members since the site is now accessible to many people not just college students anymore. Therefore, if there is someone watching those who are really not supposed to have joined these networks then it would help lead to a safer environment for the younger community. Facebook is a growing trend and it is hard to stop these children from joining so the next best thing would be being able to monitor their behavior and photos at all times. This article provides insight into concerned parents and also shows the differences in age and technological use.
The Diary of Facebook
On March 30, 2011, MTV premiered the Diary of Facebook. It takes a behind-the-scenes look at how facebook was started, how it is run, and how it operates. It features facebook creator, Mark Zuckerburg, as well as many of his employees, and it shows the evolution of facebook.
Though I have not watched the whole thing, from what I gather, it only focuses on the positives of what social media can do. The thirty minute shows discusses how one woman was able to find long-lost family members, and how another man whom has a serious disease, is able to engage with the world around him.
Often times, I think because of the class we are in and the things we hear in society, it is easy to discuss the negatives of social media. Personally, anything I have posted about social media on this blog has been negative, but it is important to look at the pros too.
Facebook, and other popular networking sites, are beneficial for a number of reasons. If they were not, why would so many of us be on them? Facebook can definitely be used as a tool to find family members, old friends or neighbors, etc. It is also a good way for businesses to promote themselves, by creating a site and letting everyone know all they need to about their business. My brother recently ventured into the business world and bought a bar in Park Slope. It is in a somewhat desolate place in the neighborhood, definitely not a high traffic area. However, with the use of websites such as Facebook, and Yelp!, he has been able to let people know of drink & food specials, as well as karaoke nights and when bands or disc jockeys will be performing. This has definitely helped his business reach out to a larger audience.
I definitely think there are both pros and cons to all social media websites, but that goes for anything in life. People need to be mature about their internet use and many problems can definitely be avoided.
What Makes Your Page Popular
We all know the internet has an extensive amount of influence over today’s society. Our class discussions revolve around the impact of social media on people and their interactions with each other. Our final project for this course includes our construction of our own Tumblr page which relates to this article that I found on Social Media Today. The article gave me some insight on what to include in my final project and may help you too in order to grab attention. It also shows us what we, as consumers, go after and the marketing tactics that appeal to us. When you break down the elements of popular pages of Facebook and other social media, there are several noticeable similarities.
The first common aspect of popular Fan pages is that they include eye-catching content such as “images with text, images alone, video, text, external links, and polls”. This data reflects our desire to be entertained by social media. People want variety and change along with a way to connect. It is only human nature to socialize, so pages that allow feedback are attractive to social media users. The article also reported that the top reasons fans choose to follow a page are that they are “being treated in a special way by the brand and can be spokesman for [the] brand” which shows that consumers want attention. It is natural for people to respond better to brands that seem concerned with them and give them special attention. There is a lot of psychology behind marketing that is often found in the way we may conduct ourselves through social media.

Twitter makes following people (stalking) easier!
Twitter has added a new update to their site, a new feature that brings up accounts or profiles of people that match certain criteria of your search. For instance if you were to search female R&B, a profile of Alicia Keys or Keyshia Cole my appear. In addition to being able to find people whom are interested in the same ideas and topics as you, there is also the option of searching for the latest updates or blogs on such topics you search for.

Although these new features seem like a great addition, I feel like these new options would work out much better on Facebook, where socialites would better utilized this searching option for a multitude of different purposes 😉 . It seems easier to connect to with people on a facebook than on twitter. However when looking at this new twitter upgrade, I feel like third party users whom are out looking for personal information and self profit can now more easily and quickly find their “victims”.
