47% of Facebook Walls Contain Profanity
For those who are worried about their online brand, some bad news. 80% of profiles contain lewd words either posted by users themselves or by their friends. What’s being posted on Facebook can have serious consequences for one’s reputation and even get you fired (the article even references a study that shows 45% of employers reference potential hires on social media sites). Linkdin has risen as a professional alternative to Facebook to create a professional profile to present yourself in a more controlled light. Each social media site presents an opportunity to present yourself in a different way or to create a different brand. Perhaps your Tumblr or Twitter account is different from how you present yourself on Facebook. Splitting your social media networks into specific spheres that present different fronts can be an effective strategy of insulating parts of your life from each other. Be professional and put your best feet forward on Linkdin, but be open and free on Facebook — so long as your profile is set to friends only and you filter your friends carefully. This may be a response to people feeling that their lives are too out in the open or out of their control if aggregated all in one place.

Disney? Really? Response
Looking back over some of the earlier posts and i was drawn to the post about Disney. In that blog and article it was explained the offense that Disney committed was a mass accumulation of Child information, without parental consent.
I only just found out about this news and I find it very offensive that this type of activity is being committed and by Disney no less!
The playstation three database was possible to be hacked into and information about many of the playstation three online users was stolen. Some financial information may have been stolen and that could lead to identity theft and forgery. Now imagine if a similar scenario happened with the information Disney was gathering and now you have a major concern over these kids.
Just as we are reminded in class, everything is stored and available four your viewing pleasures…on the Internet.

You have been poked!
I dont know what has been up lately, but a friend of mine that has kind of fallen off in keeping touch has recently been sending pokes my way on Facebook. What on earth could such a simple action on mean? Poking someone in the literal sense would seem to me as, a tap or maybe even as naughty as a pinch. (depends where)
But what social undermining could be involved in each poke that you receive or send out?
Is a poke to a new date that you have recently been seeing for the last month the same as say…poking your best friend. It most definitely would not be. If I sent a poke to one of my friends male/female it would most likely be a way of greeting, or acknowledgment, kind of like saying whats up!
However imagine poking someone you are a little more intimate with…I am not even going to go further, because there are countless hidden messages which could be contained in one single Facebook POKE!

Ins and Out of Gadgetry
As we all may be very aware, technology can be a difficult thing for a lot of people. Sometimes we don’t know all the tricks to everything. In the article Ins and Out of Gadgetry, the author explains how all this technology does not come with a manual on how to do different types of tricks. Sometimes but us exploring our technological device we learn these tricks. But it will be much easier if you can just find everything in a manual for technology. He gives shortcuts for your most common devices such as Iphone, Blackberry, internet browsers, cameras, and the web. I actually learned a couple of tricks myself by reading this article.
If this book is ever invented, then it will give those who are technology challenge a chance to be up to date with society. Nowadays, usually the younger crowd know all these tricks to their devices, but the older generations should still have the chance to learn them as well. I saw this book in Barnes and Nobles the other day, where it was a dictionary for acronyms, such as LOL and G2G, and as i skimmed through it, i learned a lot of things that i usually don’t use in my everyday typing. In the long run, you can be learning information about devices that you don’t have, but you see all the cool stuff that you can do in it, and then you have to get it.

Making Future Plans of a Social Network…
In the new york times article A social network for making future plans, it talks about a new website where you can make plans in the future. This is different because usually when you log in to Facebook or Twiter, you talk about your current plans, or plans that have been done in the past. With WhereBerry, you can share your future plans. Its actually pretty easy, you log in with your Facebook information and all of your friends that are using the website will come out in your feed and they can let you know what they are planning in the future.
This is an interesting website, because all of your ideas for planning for the future can be done and maybe you can find a buddy or two to do them with. It is also a good idea, because you can see what your friends are doing, and get ideas of what you can also do with another set of friends as well. Maybe you didn’t know that the backstreet boys were going to be in town in October, but you just found out that your friend Jane bought tickets for their concert already, and now you must have a pair. This can also work with restaurants that you want to visit. When you like celebrity pages, they can let you know what they are doing in the future and maybe you can go ahead and meet them at a certain place.
Become Famous Online
I thought this article was interesting because it talked about how different sites have gained so much popularity that they are now able to get millions of views just while being online. Some sites that allow users to upload their own videos and display their skits to those watching have also i he process gained much popularity. Its interesting to see how there feels to be a slight shift on how people are trying to get famouse and how fameis now being recognized.
I think an interesting example of this is Perez Hilton. I think that before he was well known he had a blog where he talked about celebrities. After his site gained much popularity it kind of just blew up and so did Perez Hilton. I think that people who want to become celebrities have found a new outlet to reach people and spread their name. Now, small bands have to create twitter accounts, Facebook pages just about their ban, and have their own Youtube pages. With mass information able to spread to people faster and to a larger group, it is easier to have you and your ideas out there and just a bit easier or more likely to actually become one of the few who actually become famous through their social media sites.
Society has changed so much that its easier to be noticed and famous, like that girl that song that “Sunday” song. Even bad publicity is publicity and at the end people just want to be noticed and now social media sites are making it easier than before to actually be known by many, fast.

Kid-friendly Language on the Web
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/05/17/facebook-youtube-parents-watch-web-language/
The article talks about how sites such as Youtube, Facebook and other sites have language on them that may not be kid-friendly. One of the examples the article gives is when a mother talks about how her 8-year-old was on Youtube looking up a Justin Bieber video and some of the comments on the bottom of the video displayed curse words. I dont think that is something any parent would want their child to see or think about, especially at a very young age.
However, there is not much people can do to prevent things like this from happening on a normal day-to-day basis. One of the negative things about these kinds of sites and the internet in general, especially noe, is that alot of what is on the internet is user-generated. This usually means that not much about what is up can really be wathed that closely to prevent kids from looking at it. The most we have now is software or settings that block certain websites or beg able to flag a comment, or report stuff on these kinds of sites. Unfortunately even this is not enough for some parents to make sure that their children are not watching or reading inappropriate stuff.
Its sad to say that there is not much we can do to permanently stop things like these from happening. With the way the internet is and how it is set up, inappropriate stuff is just one of the things parents have to deal with. Probably one of the best things to do for a parent who doesn’t want their child from getting to inappropriate stuff is to monitor their children while they are on the computer and make sure you have settings set up. With all that information and people online at any given moment, its really hard to make sure that what your children are able to see is parent-approved.

Report: Google to unveil mobile-payments service
Google, creator of the popular Android operating system, is looking to expand into an “ewallet” service. It makes perfect sense. You have your whole life on your phone – your contacts, e-mail, social media. You can shop and browse online with various services. There are even apps to allow you to coordinate your bills and look at your bank statements on your phone. But why not bundle more into that phone and allow you to purchase things in-store with your phone as a digital credit system? A profit can be made on these transactions, while offering the phone a competitive feature over other options.
This has the potential to greatly increase the data collected about an individual. While this data would normally be stored by a credit card or bank, this begins to aggregate personal spending habits with other information recorded through social media, e-mail or other services. Together, patterns between spending habits and common words or activities online can be worked out, with great potential for earnings through targeted advertising.
Seems as though losing your phone could be far worse than losing your wallet once was.

cyberbully awareness
what some people do not understand is the emotional effect cyber bullying has on people, especially kids. this article is about a woman named Tine Meier goes around sharing her story to parents who are not aware of the dramatic effects of cyber bullying. nowadays people do a form of bullying called “trolling” where all they do is go to different sites and pages to bully people for no reason at all. this womans story is dramatic and people need to listen and do their part to help stop it. we’ve heard many tragic stories about cyber bullying pushing people to commit suicide over the past couple of months. although people can avoid cyber bullying by staying off the internet, bullys still pursue them and the internet has to much of a lure for people not to stay away. awareness to kids and parents is the most effective way to help stop the problem. when people are aware theyre more inclined to pay more attention to their kid’s activities on the internet.

Twitter, in the classroom?
usually college professors use email to get in contact with students. apparently there’s a new movement to utilize twitter in the classroom. for assignment updates and classroom cancellations and other similar matters. whats interesting about this article is that its very similar to what were doing here in class. it discusses using twitter as a personal brand maker which we do here in class but with tumblr. twitter in the classroom also helps people become more involved into the growing industry of social media. also, since twitter has a limit for every message it teaches people to be concise with the message theyre trying to protray. this is a very positive way to utilize social media like were doing with tumblr.
