Facebook and Bullying

Yesterday in class we spent a few minutes talking about the young man who jumped off the GWB when his roommate tried to out him. We also made some mention of whether or not social media is a hindrance or helpful for a bullying.

Today I came upon an article about two young girls ages 11 and 12 and how they were charged.

In class it was mentioned that social media gives an anonimity to the child who is doing the bullying. But as we can see it also allows these kids to get caught and to try and teach others a lesson.

Children and young adults do believe that something about the Internet makes them anonymous, while the ordeal that this little girl had to go through was defiantly traumatizing it may stop others from doing so because of the shame these girls have now brought upon themselves.

Harsh Reality or Overkill?

In Old Saybrook Connecticut, a high school ran an internet safety assembly

Yet many students felt violated and that the school had infringed on their privacy. The school used photos, tweets and status updates from freshman that were required to attend the assembly.

The school found these items because students had no idea how to protect their privacy, which is something that we have spoken about in class often. Debating the idea of protecting our Internet privacy and younger generations living in a world where everything is sharable.

The principle of the school insists “say the purpose of the assembly was to make students aware of how public their “tweets,” photos and profiles are online if their privacy settings aren’t strict enough”. The school used photos and other items that were publically accessible.

I think the students that are outraged should be learning a lesson and understanding that it is not only their friends who can access their internet personas but parents, teachers, etc. I believe the school taught its lesson on privacy in a really effective way, by showing the lack of it that so many students have.

Facebook Depression

The American Academy of Pediatrics has now stated that it is necessary for children’s doctors to ask them questions about how they social network and that improper social networking may lead children to have “facebook depression”

The idea that a child may have problems integrating into social networking sites and may feel isolated is understandable. But a child that finds themselves with many friends in school and during social activities will probably find themselves being fine when it comes to social networking.

This idea of calling something facebook depression and telling doctors to look for the signs of it seems kind of ridiculous in my opinion.

What’s even funnier in this whole situation is that facebook has disputed these findings by talking about the Cornell study that someone in class has previously blogged about

Facebook Marriage Drama

We’ve all seen facebook drama unfold on someones wall  and even the extreme a chilling article about a young teen who committed suicide after being abused on the internet.

What about when it comes to marriage? Most of us don’t view facebook as being the source of drama for married people, we view it as a way for them to share baby pictures with college friends and reunite with people from the past

According to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers over 66% of divorces have been linked to Facebook. They say that while many of these affairs are not premeditated, they are still happening and the information is put on the Internet for everyone to see.

Maybe it’s time for for people to better learn their privacy settings.

Password Please

During many of our class discussions we talk about employer’s using items that we post on facebook or other social media sites to fire their employee’s or using the internet to find out things about prospective employee’s.

What about saving the time of entering a person’s name into a google search or any website that compile personal information such as http://pipl.com/, imagine your prospective employer asking you for your password and login information. This may sound unfathomable to many of us but according to the two article’s below this is exactly what happened to Robert Collins an employee of the Maryland Division of Corrections.

Mr. Collins was asked to give his login information for his facebook account while going through a re-certification processes. He had to sit as the interviewer logged in and read posts made by Mr.Collins as well as people he was friends with.

The case has now been taken up by the ACLU which states that this is a breach of the Federal Stored Communications Act and Maryland State law.
