Social Media Jobs

Since my previous post for assignment number four was about the positives of social media websites, instead of the negatives, I will continue with this trend.  It is important to note that there are an immense amount of good things that social media websites can do for people, and since more and more continue to be created, it is important that people know about the benefits of them.

The obvious benefit is that it helps one another keep in touch.  Whether it be someone with a disease who needs contact with the outside world, or someone who just wants to interact with their cousin who lives far away, social media websites are a necessity.  Why?  Let me ask you a question, when is the last time you picked up the telephone to call someone?  This generation is focused on email & text messaging, and making a phone call has almost become a thing of the past.

I remember when I received my first cell phone.  It had no color and the only game on it was snake.  It was big and ugly, but it got the job done; making phone calls. Text messaging and social media websites, were not prevalent until the time I entered high school.

Another tremendous positive for social media websites is that there are more job opportunities, and since the economic decline, this is something everyone can be grateful for.  By typing into google search : “Social Media Jobs,” this website popped up : http://www.socialmediajobs.com/ , with the headline “Social Media Jobs: Turn Your Passion into a Profession.”  With such an engaging title, it was intriguing to me and it reminded me of why social media is a good thing.  Many people enjoy writing their opinions, thoughts, etc. onto social media websites, and if it is something you love, why not turn it into a career?  There have been many people who have visited Baruch for panel discussions in the library who have done this very thing.  It may be difficult to ascertain, but almost nothing in life is easy.

How Social Media will change in 2011

Here in this article it is highlighting the ten different ways which the social media in 2011 will change from previous years.

The change on this list that I think most people expected is that social media will be now more super-sized than before. The reason for this is because now there will be more service providers than ever using social networks for something with their company. For example just the other day while reading the NY times, I came across a article about how T-Mobile plans on coming up with a way that you can make calls on Facebook to your friends.

According to the article mobile is becoming the gateway to our world which I tend to agree with even more now with the creation of the Ipad and more smartphones.  Last year was the first year ever in which the sale of smart phones outsold desktops and also laptops.  In addition to this, sales for applications on the Iphone and Ipad hit the 7 billion mark.

Another change we should expect to see in 2011 is more videos being used. It seems to me like  more things are now caught on video than in the past. Things that happen in the subway station you can always find on video such as the rat running inside of a train. These videos taking on phones become a big hit because you can share these videos you recorded on your facebook which is a reason for the 2 million videos shared on facebook in just one month.

Do you think Social Media will change negatively in 2011?

Catching Up with FaceBook..

Friendster has decided to do a complete overhaul of their own social networking site to try and keep up with Facebook! “Friendster e-mailed its members over the past week to inform them to save their pictures, profile information, messages and blog posts on other sites by May 31.” Although their spokesman claims competing with Facebook would be crazy and they are doing this to, “push the boundaries” of their business, it’s clearly to keep Friendster afloat and profitable. Apparently they will revamp the site “focusing on a new platform for social interaction in gaming, music, entertainment and online shopping.” These changes are apparently to do something Facebook doesn’t, to be an entirely new site and experience. Membership will continue to be free.

My opinion on this is that it may be a good idea, but who’s to say Facebook won’t quickly follow suit? Facebook already has various interactive games available, music can easily be posted, and entertainment is easily available on FB as well. Their idea is to be a separate entity from FB, no photo albums, no profile info, no blog posts or messages, but there will still be members’ pages. how exactly does that work and how are you to identify yourself to your friends, by username only? Although the idea seems fresh and new, I’m a bit skeptical. I think Facebook can easily catch on while maintaining their format, however Friendster obviously reserves the right to try and be progressive.

Facebook and Bullying

Yesterday in class we spent a few minutes talking about the young man who jumped off the GWB when his roommate tried to out him. We also made some mention of whether or not social media is a hindrance or helpful for a bullying.

Today I came upon an article about two young girls ages 11 and 12 and how they were charged.

In class it was mentioned that social media gives an anonimity to the child who is doing the bullying. But as we can see it also allows these kids to get caught and to try and teach others a lesson.

Children and young adults do believe that something about the Internet makes them anonymous, while the ordeal that this little girl had to go through was defiantly traumatizing it may stop others from doing so because of the shame these girls have now brought upon themselves.

You have the right to remain SILENT Officers!!

I came across this article in the New York Times about police officers and their social networking pages such as Facebook. Many of these officers are being reprimanded for the information they put on their pages that is work related. Some of these comments have given some police headquarters and police officials a bad reputation. Now it is easy to say that the officers first amendment right is being violated. However, their actions are compromising other individuals and not just themselves. I think that if this is in fact true in which people are seeing the kind of officers being hired then it makes precincts look bad and people will start to begin protesting against them. In some cases, officers post up photos of crime scenes or themselves posing with guns. There are also obscene comments from officers such as this one: “These people should have died when they were young, anyway, I’m just doing them a favor,”according to an officer speaking of a homeless man on the street. who was beaten by police. I think that the police department heads have every right to censor this information because one person makes a reflection on the whole precinct. Although people do not like to be censored, a job in police enforcement should allow every one to feel equally safe and protected by police officers. In these cases, it is easy to see that people are discriminated against and then society will take a look at who hired them. Every employer is liable to watch their backs when their reputation is at risk. As a waitress at Applebees, i have even had my employers tell us that we need to be respectful to people anywhere around the region because if they come in the restaurant they will recognize whether we did something bad or good around them if they remember us. Therefore, even in a place where people may think it is not that serious to watch your actions such as working in a restaurant it is. Law enforcement should have much more stricter rules as well because their duty is to be protective of its citizens. I would feel really uncomfortable finding out that an officer in my town would post such things on their Facebook because i would want to know how many more officers feel the same way or have done the same thing. The head officials are not telling officers to not post anything at all, but they are simply making sure they watch what they are putting out for public eyes to see. If the officers want to protect themselves, they should not allow people to know who they are employed by on Facebook or what goes on work related. In any case, they should become familiar with Facebook’s privacy settings and learn how to separate their work lives from their personal lives.

The pros of blogging.

It is a new trend now everyone is interesting in blogging. It a new way to express your opinion and provide information about a subject matter and be rewarded sometimes for it. It another form of social media that is claiming the interest of many. Blogging allows you to fully express what on your mind and gives you the opportunity to choose from a wider range of privacy setting options. Blogging unlike social networks such as face book allows to choose a privacy setting which allows only a specific audience to view your blogs. you are given the choice to have your blogs open to internet search engines or the choice of creating a pass word for only you and selected individuals to view your blog.

Another pro about blogging is that it opens up a world of opportunity in the workforce. For example a future journalist. BLOGGING allows you to create a specific brand for yourself so that your audience or even an employer can identify you by the blogs you produce. Many employers take the opportunity to search blogging sites so that they can get their hands on the next “big thing” or an employee who has shown great potential in their writing and can be a great asset towards their company.

The video I posted shows the pros and cons of blogging . It shows that blogging can have a negative effect on your personal brand because not everyone would share the same opinion with you and can prove you wrong damaging your credibility…

Cyber-bullying

With the good there’s always bad.I mention this because, social networks are intended to bring numerous social networks and communities together to share commonalities; however, most of the time these sites are misused. In this article, two teens created a false Facebook account and used it against a fellow classmate.

The victim’s father felt it was best for the teens to attend pretrial diversion programs. This program assists teens understand the harm and consequences of their actions, and punishment is assigned to them.

The girls said they targeted the victim because “nobody liked her.”Which is often times the main reason to be targeted. In addition to boost the opponents self esteem.

In this article teens are warned of websites that may affect them, mentally. It mentions a site called Formspring, which gives users the opportunity to ask fellow users questions, anonymously.According to parenting expert Michele Borba,

“Formspring is one of the new kinds of websites that looks like a social network that is popping up online for our daughters. It looks tame enough…but once they log on, what it actually encourages instead is to send vicious notes toward one another in an anonymous nature,” said Borba.

However, as I learned in another sociology course, as we use the streets of any city we cannot blame the street for misuse. We can blame the individuals who use it incorrectly.I feel this is the same for users of the internet. After Borba’s statement I feel she is trying to blame the website for the content which is visible to users. However, we must keep in mind these comments written by users can be positive, not only negative.

In addition to cyber-bullying, teens are bombarded with other types of information while using the web.For example, other sites that promote unhealthy lifestyles. The article gives it opinion on what should be done.Read below.

So how do parents keep their teens off these websites? Our experts offer this advice:

First, invest in parental control software; monitor your teen’s online history; do Google searches on their full names to see if anything comes up; and limit their time online.

“You need to step up to the plate. You need to monitor because we’re raising our children in a tough world,” said Borba.

Since we are adapting to technology and educational institutions use the internet in classroom settings and for take home assignments(for any subjects)would this be the solution to cyber-bullying for teen girls?Or is it important to know the factors behind the situation from both parties?

No more GOOD or EVIL than a MIRROR is BEAUTIFUL or UGLY

There have been endless articles on the internet, as being a force of good or evil, one of them warn us “If you are not perplexed, you should be. As the web becomes ever more widespread, infiltrating our lives and shaping what we think is possible, we are increasingly unnerved about what we might have unleashed. Will it promote democratic collaboration and creativity? Or will the web be a malign influence, rendering us collectively stupid by our reliance on what Google and Wikipedia tell us being true, or, worse, promoting bigotry, thoughtlessness, criminality and terror? Sunday Times. I certainly believe we’ve seen all of the above. However; as I read in a blog, “The internet’s powerful force is just a medium of communication and is no more good or evil than a mirror is beautiful or ugly.” In the specific case of the social software applications, they enable users as “agents of technological change” to explore, learn, discover, organize, publicize, etc. The way I see it the internet is the greatest invention of our generation.

The complexity of the human race has being analyzed from every possible angle, and it seems that the urge for communication responds to the need for self-preservation, security, pleasure, reproduction, belonging, validation and love as the main drivers of our social behavior. In general, the changes we are seeing today in our society have a common ground, and that has to do with what make us human.  “According to Nietzsche, man is determined by the play of vital forces and attractions and not by the reason.” For instance, I sometimes try to understand the Internet as if it was some kind of a new powerful machine that has come and engulfed us, or a force that it has made itself comfortable among us, an entity that is here to stay and has opened the gates to our unlimited potential and bounded only by our imagination. It give us powerful tools, as it cannot act on its own, so it is our  call what we do with it, evil or good, make your choice.

People are flocking to the social networks, for many reasons. Most are good reasons, such as staying in constant touch with dear family and friends, catch up in latest trends, for an opportunity to make new friends, hang out, flirt etc. Some individuals’ main purpose is to capitalize and profit from those seeking social contact, others want to spread their gospel plus many more reasons impossible to list. However, these network publics, as anything around us, are being transformed where the line between “private and public” is increasingly unclear. Like they say a world where things are “public by default, private when necessary.” Dmlcentral,

As we approach the end of our Social Communication course, we have discussed and analyzed the significance of communication both digital and non-digital, and the ways they are affecting our personal and professional lives. Furthermore, We’ve discussed how the new tools of social  media are  transforming the way we do business as we have come to know it. As we have engaged in discussions, and written about it, we’ve have witness how the internet is shaping the way we communicate and share information. Our speech or communication by speaking, writing with the aid of symbols, gestures and so on, have aided us to fulfill our natural needs to achieve a more fulfilling existence.

The internet has shaken and collapsed the availability of information structure that supported the cost of communications, where it seems that there is nothing we can’t do; the commodity of information is available to the masses at almost no cost. “Today information on steroids has become a surplus commodity. It chases you, hounds you, beeps, vibrates, pops up, invades and permeates every waking moment.” Asian conversations

Don’t Forget to Schedule Your Tweet

This being my last blog, I wanted to discuss a service that acknowledges the growing internet dependency and social media usage. This article lists the best times to Tweet for you to get the most exposure. The website is basically an advertisement for a service called Garious which is a Tweet scheduler for professionals to market themselves and their businesses. Garious argues that Tweeting at 9 a.m. gets the most exposure because “you can target people coming to work in America and Canada’s West Coast, you can tweet to tweeple at lunch time in the East Coast, and you can have your tweets reach as far as London where  Britons are calling it the end of another work day”. I, myself, do not have a Twitter account to test this out, but the article’s claim seems valid.

This started out as a useful social media tool for businesses to get their name out there, but this other Garious advertisement offers their services to social media addicts who feel that they need help with managing their time. It seems a little ironic that these internet addicts are using another online resource to control their social media obsession. Garious offers their services to “pre-schedule your tweets and other social media activities”. It seems that the future of some online services will be, strangely, along the lines of trying to curb internet addiction. In a way, Garious is a useful tool for those who spend a majority of their time marketing their business online, but could possibly be used by internet addicts who want to manage their time better by planning social media activity beforehand.

Redefining privacy on Facebook

For my final blog, I found this article on TIME.com which captured my eyes and attention. It was very intriguing and interesting to read the many ways listed on this website as to how people relate and understand Facebook. The article titled “How Facebook is redefining Privacy”  According to this article, within the next few weeks, Facebook will “officially log its 500millionth active citizen.”  This makes you wonder, hmm.. “what number am I”.  Just kidding, but on  a serious note, it makes one wonder, how Facebook has greatly changed and altered peoples everyday lives and also how it has affected various cultures and countries around the world.

In the article, they talked about how the actual work settings relates to the actual Facebook website.  It was said that “hundreds of employees work in big, open-air bullpens-without cubicle walls, there isn’t much privacy, so each desk seems like, a Facebook wall”   From this, it’s obvious that these employees are practicing whatever they preached.  The article also talks about Mark Zuckerberg’s idea of targeting “your likes”

Finally, they used the question ” What Voldemort Is to Harry Potter” is basically what Facebook and privacy is to society.  It was mentioned that, as the years progressed, privacy has been changing and people don’t want complete privacy.  In fact, they want control over what they share and what they don’t.  In a sense, the comparison to Voldemort, makes me think that without Voldemort, Harry Potter would not be that interesting likewise, without Facebook, the internet would not be the same.  Definitely, now we know, the internet has been changed and will not be the same like it was eight years ago.
