Making Future Plans of a Social Network…
In the new york times article A social network for making future plans, it talks about a new website where you can make plans in the future. This is different because usually when you log in to Facebook or Twiter, you talk about your current plans, or plans that have been done in the past. With WhereBerry, you can share your future plans. Its actually pretty easy, you log in with your Facebook information and all of your friends that are using the website will come out in your feed and they can let you know what they are planning in the future.
This is an interesting website, because all of your ideas for planning for the future can be done and maybe you can find a buddy or two to do them with. It is also a good idea, because you can see what your friends are doing, and get ideas of what you can also do with another set of friends as well. Maybe you didn’t know that the backstreet boys were going to be in town in October, but you just found out that your friend Jane bought tickets for their concert already, and now you must have a pair. This can also work with restaurants that you want to visit. When you like celebrity pages, they can let you know what they are doing in the future and maybe you can go ahead and meet them at a certain place.
Digital City
It’s no secret that technology has become an important part in nearly everyone’s live, whether directly or indirectly. In class, we’ve discussed how it affects our social lives, interactions, and relationships. An while technology has been used by both the private and public sector, it seems that the two have now combined.
In an annoucement made on Monday, May 16th, Mayor Bloomberg has pledged to make New York City the “No. 1 Digitial City”. Using the popular social networking sites of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and FourSquare, the goal is to make the City of New York more Internet accessible. It is also to redefine the presence of New York online, redesigning its website and plans to “to acquire a .nyc suffix for Web pages”. The city has also hired it’s first ever Chief Digital Officer.
After reading several articles, the point of all this is still unclear to me. The only explanation I could find was a quote from Mayor Bloomberg: “We want New York City to be the nation’s premier digital city – in how local government interacts with New Yorkers, in how New Yorkers have access to and capitalize on new technologies, and in how our tech and digital media sectors evolve, grow businesses and create jobs”. This, to me, seems pretty vague. The city appears to just be expanding on the general purpose of the Internet: to connect people more quickly and efficiently.
With all the budget cuts (including education cuts which have forced Baruch students to visit Albany and lobby to keep our Pell Grants and block outrageous CUNY tuition hikes), Bloomberg’s goal just seems pointless. He even flat out states that the city does not have the money to complete this task on its own and will look to companies for aid.
Don’t you think that the money can be better put to use? What about restructuring the MTA so we have fewer corrupt officials and more service? This may seem cynical but at the end of the day, the city is constantly trying to bring in tourists and improve the things that RESIDENTS have no concern over.

R.I.P Social Media?..Yea Right!
http://technorati.com/blogging/article/has-social-media-had-its-hey/
Social Media has not had its hey day!!! Not only can you speak to relatives and friends far away, but you are able to Skype them into your living room. So Social media hey day is heating up ;)!! The potential of and the demand for these social networking sites remains infinite.
Social media has its positive and negative attributes like anything else. Its major drawbacks stems from easy access to the world wide web and people’s personal information. The fact that you can chat, make friends, play games with others from around the globe is not only amazing, but magical. The drawback here is bad, mean people are also online. Sometimes, there is no telling who is who. You go on, and just hope for the best!
However, when social media is correctly used, it affords us a broad and varied spectrum of services such as online teaching and learning, shopping, and movies/theater. Nowadays, you really don’t have to leave your home to accomplish many of your daily tasks. With the flick of a button, you have arrived at your destination through a link or intended site.
I think this article sums up how beneficial social media can be when the author states,…”you need to have a strategy in place that takes into account your strengths. Additionally it needs to have specific targets and goals, all driven by a tactical, yet strategical, plan. You need to have a way of measuring your social media marketing results and a means of fine-tuning them”. Because networking is key to a successful path in this day and age and social media is the medium that bridges that flow of data.
The firing of a R.I Physician puts spotlight on the use of social media in Medicine
This article looks a registered nurse that was fired last year for posting a patients information on Face book. Although this nurse was fired last year there have been other incidents where doctors have been reprimanded and terminated for disclosing patients confidential information on social networking sites.
This article specifically discusses medical professional however recently there have been other professionals that have been fired for the misuse of networking social media sites by publicly discussing things pertaining to their jobs.
This is just more evidence that proves that social networkingweb site are not as private as one thinks. Some one has to be mindful that what they are posting that although your setting is private it can still be viewed and can cost you your job.

Homeless man finds his fame
Most of the talk this semester is revolving around the question of what is the point of social networking? Why do we choose to put our information out for the public to read? For most of us we use facebook and twitter because it gives us the ability to voice our opinion and gives an even larger audience for us to talk too. But when it comes to the things that we are talking about on these social networks the question is still what is the point? Why do we want to update our twitter with a new interesting or funny quote? Why do we want to upload our cool new pictures from our spring break? Maybe its because we all just want to get noticed.
The internet is known for the vast amount of information it supplies but it is also known for rocketing the careers for the most random people in the world. Someone can get known worldwide by simply posting a hilarious video on youtube or by creating a really great twitter persona. An example of the power the internet has is shown in this article found in the New York Post on January 5th. A panhandler in Ohio was given the chance of a lifetime when a video of him begging on the roadside was posted on the internet and became a sensation. His outstanding radio voice landed him a job with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a free home. One minute this man is one the street and the next he his living out a dream, and why? Because of the internet.
So when the question is asked what is the appeal of these networks or why have they caught on so fast the answer can be simple. The internet gives people the access to the rest of the world. People are crazy and will become obsessed with anything so at this point anyone has the ability to become famous. The obsession with social networking makes sense, people want to be noticed, and the internet makes it that much easier.

Hollaback!
In class we’ve discussed the goods, evils and just plain bizarre opinions of different mediums of social networking. Well today I came across a New York Times article Keeping Women Safe Through Social Networking. I would like to classify this under GOOD intent, but I’m hesitant about the movement this site is promoting. I will explain why:
In this article, the author tells us about a new Social Networking site created and available to women to increase our safety and comfort level. ihollaback.org “is a movement dedicated to ending street harassment using mobile technology,” according to it’s website. “Ihollaback is taking awareness to a new level in helping to create a platform where people can talk about this worldwide,” said Holly Kearl, author of “Stop Street Harassment: Making Public Places Safe and Welcoming for Women,” and creator of Stopstreetharassment.com.
Basically this site is encouraging women EVERYWHERE to share their experiences with street harassment, and also ask them to map out where this occurred. The site, as viewed above, actually has a map with these points/place specified, right on their homepage. I’m guessing it’s supposed to help women know where to expect it. I understand how as women we feel objectified and at times uncomfortable being approached or harassed by men whom we at times classify as creepers. These sites obviously are to shed light on this area of discomfort and fight back using the most popular form of Communication we have, which is the internet and by default, our phones. However I’m wondering how exactly this will STOP street harassment. If you go to the site, it gives you options to share stories, information about street harassment, and locations on your facebook or twitter.
I’m not sure exactly how I feel about this site. Parts of me are like: hell yeah! empower us! make the street harassment stop! but another part of me wonders, how exactly it will help stop something that clearly occurs and is ignored in our society. I guess I’m skeptical, but found it interesting, nonetheless and thought I would share it.

What is Social Networking?
Just recently I came across this website called What is Social Networking?
On the homepage there’s an article defining what Social Networking is and on a tab on the side there’s a list of topics related to Social networking. These Topics range from Creating a site, to Cyber bullying, and Which sites are useful. I truly didn’t think a site like this existed. Now this isn’t a fancy site with great html and Java script. This is a pretty standard site, text, bad graphics, and suck advertisements; obviously a homemade site, but it’s surprising the kind of information you find.
I explored the site a little and found some of the articles interesting and highly relevant to our class. in Addicted to Social Sites?, the author uses terms like Internet Addiction Disorder, Net Junkie, or online-a-holic to describe people addicted to being alone. it made me think, aren’t we all Net Junkies then? we get most of HW readings online, and while online, we check our email, some of us have our e-mail connected to our phones so we are always in contact, we are also on Facebook, or twitter. Who escapes this term really? The author goes on to describe the tellnig signs of Internet Addiction Disorder: “1) Excessive computer use typically associated with loss of spatial time perception; neglect of basic human drives, proper nutrition, personal hygiene, relationships; 2) Feelings of isolation, withdrawal, depression and extreme agitation, high-anxiety if the computer is unavailable or breaks down; 3) Low tolerance levels, including an unjustifiable need for bigger, better, faster computer equipment, the latest and greatest software; and 4) Low accomplishment level, procrastination, lying, social isolation and chronic fatigue.”
I wonder, how many of us can say we show all four signs?
