Sociology 1005 – Spring 2009

Reading assignment for Thursday, March 26th

I told you that we’d have a chapter from Animal, Vegetable, Miracle to read for Thursday, but the scanner at home wouldn’t cooperate, and I want you to have enough time to read. So next week we’ll have that chapter, and also a chapter from bell hooks’ wonderful recent book, Belonging: A Culture of Place, which is about the same area in Kentucky.

For tomorrow, Thursday, March 26th, I’d like you to read an article about the Ed Roberts Campus, a building project in the San Francisco East Bay area that will house several different agencies that all support people with disabilities.

If you get curious and would like to do more reading, there’s a wonderful article about the history of the disability movement in Berkeley. More information about the Ed Roberts Campus is on their website.

Many of our class themes will come up in this reading — I’d like you to think particularly about how disability affects social class, and how social class affects access to resources to help people with disabilities.

See you on Thursday!

  1. I like the ideas of building the campus for the disable people. It is very helpful because we help them realized that the are a part in the society. Under the same environment, they don’t feel ashamed or isolate from the community. In addition, the have more chances to work and improve thier bodies. We should have more organiztions which donate the budgets to build for buildings like this.

  2. Wow, this is great!!! I especially like how the architects put so much thought into, trying to accommodate everyone and making a pretty space for them to enjoy.

  3. I think that people with disabilities should be integrated into society. This project is a great idea, because it will assist people with special needs. I believe that we could and should more to help disabled feel a valuable part of society. It would be great if we started to teach our children from a very early age that not everybody is the same and some people need special assistance. If they were exposed to disabled people in a direct way they would to be sensitive and considerate people. I also want to say that it is difficult for those of us who never had a contact with disabled people to imagine what they have to go throuhg. That’s why I think they should be an active part of our community, either through work or school.
