Coalition for Hispanic Family Services (CHFS) is a non-profit community-based family service agency in Bushwick. CHFS began as a sub-committee of the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families in 1986 and consisted of child welfare professionals focused on the presence of child welfare services for Latino children and families in New York City. Three years later, in 1989 it was established as a non-profit organization. From their website, CHFS’ mission is “to empower children, youth and families with opportunities for success and self-reliance while reinforcing their sense of culture and self-identity. This is achieved through a holistic, culturally competent, family based approach.”

Make the Road New York (MRNY) is a non-profit organization that helps millions of people in immigrant and working-class communities through legal and survival services, transformative education, community organizing and policy innovation. The issues MRNY focuses on are education, health justice, housing & environmental justice, immigration, policing & criminal justice, TGNCIQ Justice and workplace justice. On their website, it states, “everyone who comes with an individual story of abuse and exploitation finds that they are not alone – that in collectivizing our experiences and voices, we can build the power to change not just one case, but entire systems.”

Mayday Space

Mayday Space is a community center and organizing hub in Bushwick that hosts various events for grassroots organizations and groups, Bushwick residents, artists and activists. Mayday Space is a volunteer-powered project that works collectively with other organizations and collaborators. Recently, Mayday partnered with Bushwick Ayuda Mutua, a grassroots organization dedicated to helping those in Bushwick impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. On their website Mayday Space includes in their mission that they’re “a resource for activists and organizers working to envision and promote alternatives to current injustices, to build collective power and to push for broader systemic change.”
