1. The Diccionario de derechoprocesal civil was written by Eduardo Pallares. It was published by the publisher Porrua S.A. in Mexico in 1983 and was also distributed to universities throughout the United States. The publisher Porrua S.A. is one of the longest-established businesses operating in the Mexican book trade. The Diccionario de derechoprocesal civil is available in both electronic (website www.scribd.com) and in print.
2. The dictionary is not a bilingual dictionary so a translator should have a vast and wide vocabulary of the Spanish language in order to use this book. They can double check the meanings of various law terms in order to ensure that they are using the right terms.

a) A translator working for a law journal would have to use this dictionary in order to translate the details of a high profile

lawsuit.

b) A legal translator that works as a paralegal for a law firm would have to use this dictionary in order to translate client

messages.

c) A court interpreter would need to consult this dictionary in order for translating the details of a court case.

The dictionary I will be evaluating is Dictionary of Chemistry, English-Spanish or Spanish-English by Kenneth Allen Hornak. This dictionary on its 2^nd edition was published in January 2008 by Editorial Castilla la Vieja property of Kenneth Allen Hornak. This publisher is well known for the many Dictionaries publication used by Harvard, Yale and Cornell. Lexicographer and terminologist Kenneth Allen Hornak, also published 17 specialized dictionaries which brings to lexicography his expertise in English-Spanish / Spanish-English scientific and technical terminology acquired over many years of successful translation work in various fields. This dictionary is now available in print and online as an electronic resource thru Baruch Library database however it is distributed around the world. Amazon.com has an entire section of books and dictionaries written and published by Kenneth Hornak.

Usage by Translator

–          This dictionary can be used by a bilingual Chemistry professor whom native language is not English or Spanish and wants to teach this class in his second language.

–          Also a translator can use this document for translation work related to science, specifically Chemistry and Physics since it contains information useful for both.

–          “The Dictionary of Chemistry aims to serve as an effective bridge between English and Spanish for chemists and students of chemistry throughout the world”.

User Friendly

 The online resource is user friendly and it has complicated words that would be hard to find an accurate translation thru a translation engine. For example I search an ingredient I’ve seen in some medicine bottle called “Acidophilus Milk. I searched thru google and the translation I got didn’t sound correct, is more a machine translation. The result from Google was “ leche acidófila”, meanwhile the dictionary gives you two options; la leche acidofilus, lactobacilina.

The dictionary I will be evaluating is called the Dictionary of Mathematics English-Spanish, Spanish-English by Kenneth Allen Hornak. This dictionary was written and published in October 2005 in print version. The publisher of this book is Editorial Castilla La Vieja which is also owned by Kenneth Allen Hornak. They are a reputable publisher with about 17 different reference works located in over 35 countries worldwide. Libraries that use their books including the Dictionary of Mathematics are Harvard, Cornell, Yale, and Stanford. Dictionary of Mathematics was later turned into an electronic resource and published online in 2011. The dictionary, as mentioned, is available in print and as an electronic resource and is distributed worldwide.

Usage by Translator

A translator that would use this dictionary would use it for projects to translate works from English to Spanish and vice versa. A translator could use it to translate a book on the concepts of mathematics. In addition, they could use it to translate for mathematicians who want to communicate with each other about concepts in math. Another example is to use it to translate statistical terms in a presentation as this dictionary also contains statistics information.

User Friendly

Some words that can be found in this dictionary are absolute value of a real number, annual interest rate, and aclarar un teorema. According to the Dictionary of Mathematics, absolute value of a real number is translated into “valor absolute de un número real.” Annual interest rate is translated into “tasa de interés anual; la razón anual de interés.” Aclarar un teorema is translated into “to clarify a theorem.” All these definitions are supported by the Electropedia: The World’s Online Electrotechnical Vocabulary and Pima Community College’s Bilingual Mathematics Dictionary. This dictionary has good contemporary usage as it can help translators in their work translating math terms easily.

As someone who used this dictionary, I found it to be very user-friendly. It is easy to locate terms and easy to switch between English to Spanish and vice versa thanks to it being an electronic resource. It is presented in a coherent manner, easy to locate, and easily retrievable.

3.     Dorland diccionario de idiomas de medicina inglés-español, español-inglés, revisadores Rafael Luna Méndez, Luis Rodríguez, Jesús Fernández.

El diccionario que estaré evaluando es Dorlando diccionario de idiomas de medicina ingles/español, español/ingles. El diccionario fue traducida y editada por Gea consultoría editorial, S.L.L e impresa por  Elsevier España en julio de 2005. De igual manera fue revisada y traducida por doce profesionales de los cuales nueve son doctores y tres son licenciados. Según la página web oficial de  Gea consultoría editorial, son “responsable desde 1995 de la traducción y publicación de más de mil libros para las editoriales más importantes del mundo y miles de artículos para numerosas empresas multinacionales”, creando así una reputación digno de confianza para el diccionario. De igual manera según una descripción detallada del diccionario en Barnes and Noble.com “durante más de 100 años ha sido y es la referencia más importante en el campo de la terminología médica. Con más de 100.000 entradas que recogen todos los términos fundamentales de Medicina y Ciencias de la Salud que estudiantes y profesionales de estas áreas necesitan conocer si quieren leer en inglés o preparar algún trabajo en este idioma”. Este diccionario está disponible de forma impresa, ha sido utilizada popularmente por un sin número de profesionales en el área de medicina y está distribuido internacionalmente.

Utilizado por un traductor

Este diccionario puede ser utilizado por un traductor para buscar terminología médica para un artículo, ensayo o tesis universitario; así como también por estudiantes de medicina que estudien en de inglés a español o viceversa y por ultimo por un profesor que necesite educarse en algún termino de español/inglés o ingles/español.

Fácil de usar

El diccionario es fácil de usar pero el diccionario seria únicamente utilizado por profesionales o estudiantes de la medicina porque el diccionario no ofrece ninguna descripción o explicación de las palabras. Sin embargo no sería útil para una persona que no tenga ningún conocimiento de medicina. Adicionalmente busque palabras como synalgic-sinalgico y keratometry-queratometria y estas traducciones las encontré en distintas fuentes utilizando a Google.

1 – How authoritative is this dictionary?

This guide to English-Spanish and Spanish-English legal terms and definitions contains over 50,000 entries that include accurate translations of terms, example sentences, and quotations from newspapers and magazines to show how the terms are used in real life.

The dictionary is written by P.H. Collin, and it was published in 1999.

Peter Collin Publishing has produced over 70 specialized dictionaries, vocabulary workbooks, and bilingual glossaries and dictionaries. They are compiled by highly trained language professionals, but rather than guarding the stuffy status quo, these linguists document how the language is actually used for practical purposes.

It is only available on internet by Credo Reference. Credo’s Reference Collections is a web site which enables libraries to build deep, specific ebook collections from highly regarded publishers around the world. This Collection covers the primary disciplines of Higher Education, providing students with the reference tools they need to perform research at any level of study. With continuous updates, this Collection includes over 600 titles with particular emphasis on encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, and reference handbooks.

2 – Projects for which a translator would consult this dictionary:

1. In business: translations of legal terms for contracts in English or Spanish.
2. In law firms: translations of legal documents.
3. In commerce: translations of legal international documents.

3 – Using the dictionary:

The dictionary is available only for subscribers. Baruch’s students have access through Newman Library.

The use of this dictionary is a little cumbersome. Once you get to Credo Reference’s web site, the search of a specific word gives you many results from different ebooks. You will need to choose the result from Spanish law dictionary Spanish/English, English/Spanish, Diccionario de términos jurídicos, by P.H. Collin.

This dictionary is very reliable because it provides comprehensive coverage of all aspects of British, American and Spanish law. Covers subjects including criminal, civil, commercial and international law. Comments are also included in both languages to clarify entries that relate to specific legal terms, institutions and organizations of a country where either English or Spanish is spoken and which have no equivalent in the other language.

4 – How user-friendly is the dictionary?

As it is mentioned above, for Baruch’s students the access to the dictionary is somehow not very friendly, because you will need to go to several pages before you get to the search site. However, the information presented by the web site once the search is done is clear and presented in a coherent way.

Diccionario técnico, inglés-español- Grupo #4

1)      El diccionario fue escrito por Guy Malgorn; traducido, revisado y aumentado por María Rodríguez con la colaboración de Pedro Armisen.

2)      Paraninfo es la editorial del diccionario el cual fue publicado en Madrid en 1977. Desde su creación en 1954, Paraninfo ha sido una editorial emblemática en España y América Latina en el campo de la publicación de libros dedicados a la formación profesional y técnica, tanto de autores en lengua española como de traducciones de obras en otros idiomas. La compañía fue fundada como editorial de ciencia y de formación técnica. A mediados de los años sesenta Paraninfo se introdujo con gran profusión en los mercados profesionales. Los libros de Paraninfo están dirigidos a profesores y alumnos de ciclos formativos y de universidad, y a profesionales.

3)      El diccionario se distribuye nacionalmente y se encuentra disponible únicamente de forma impresa.

4)      Paraninfo no es una editorial muy reconocida a nivel mundial ni tampoco conserva una gran reputación o nombre por lo tanto la autoridad del diccionario es cuestionable. Sin embargo, es muy importante tomar en cuenta que este diccionario técnico expone exhaustivamente la terminología científica y técnica relacionada con máquinas-herramientas, minas, motores de combustión, entre otros.

5)      Este es un diccionario útil de trabajo para técnicos, especialistas y traductores que han de manejar este tipo de información en su quehacer diario.

6)      El diccionario no es fácil de leer por lo puede resultar un tanto complicado para una persona criticar el contenido si no sabe de este tipo de cosas y más aún determinar si es coherente o no. Pero me imagino que sería un trabajo mucho más simple para alguien que tenga conocimiento acerca del contenido.

Este diccionario en realidad no define los términos técnicos sino que simplemente los traduce del inglés al español proveyendo sinónimos. Por lo tanto fue prácticamente imposible para mí comparar los significados de estas palabras.

1)      The publisher is Éditions Larousse, which is reputable and popular. It has published a number of other dictionaries in addition to the one at hand. This dictionary was written and edited with the contribution of over 30 people and was published in May of 2004. It is available in print and as a downloadable electronic file. It is distributed internationally since it was printed in Mexico, the company itself is French, and I am examining it here in New York.

2)      A translator might consult this dictionary when translating sophisticated novels in either language (English or Spanish) because the dictionary translates both ways and contains 400,000 translations. A translator could also utilize this dictionary to translate film and even to translate scientific or medical articles because the dictionary does contain some specialized scientific/medical terms such as ‘myelin,’ ‘myocardium,’ and ‘calcificaciόn.’ He/she could also use it to translate sports articles because the dictionary contains a section with translations and illustrations of specialized terms in sports, music, botany, housing, and other useful categories.

3)      To test this dictionary against other sources, I looked up three words: ‘escanciar’ (to serve; to pour out), ‘escindir’ (to split), and ‘oblada’ (sea bream). Two of the three words (escanciar and escindir) were defined the same way by this dictionary and the online dictionary Spanish Dict. ‘Oblada,’ on the other hand, was defined somewhat peculiarly by Spanish Dict. as a “funeral offering of bread for the souls of the deceased.” To resolve the controversy, I looked it up in other online sources, and some of them did not even contain the word, which suggests that it is not widely used/known. The few sources that did contain it, however, defined it as “sea bream” or some variation of that (e.g. “a type of fish”), which suggests that Larousse’s definition is accurate and reliable. This dictionary is certainly relevant for contemporary usage since it was published only 10 years ago.

4)      The dictionary is user-friendly because as stated above, it is extremely comprehensive, containing a rich vocabulary and specialized terms, along with some illustrations in the last section. The words are ordered alphabetically and a lot of them come with translations of useful derived expressions. For example, the word ‘extracto’ (summary, resume) is followed by the expression ‘extracto de cuenta,’ which is translated as “bank statement.” In addition, the dictionary contains fowl words and expressions, which may not be a very benevolent thing but makes it appear more user-friendly and comprehensive. The dictionary should not be too difficult to locate and retrieve, since I was able to locate it in Baruch library and it is also available on Amazon.

Additional Info: In 2013, Larousse was involved in a scandal in France because its 2014 edition, scheduled to be published this June, defined marriage as “a solemn act between two same-sex or different-sex persons, who decide to establish a union”. This occurred before gay marriage became officially legal in France, and the opposition was infuriated that the dictionary company took a side before the Parliament’s decision on the matter.

My first reaction at reading this dictionary was of surprise. I was expecting the standard style I have seen in Spanish, French and Italian dictionaries. The format for this Maya itzaj language was a hybrid between a language textbook and the actual dictionary.

It is a fairly new piece of writing published on 1998 by the prestigious University of Utah Press. The author is Charles Andrew Hofling, who has been studying the Mayan culture and focused on the preservation of this ancient almost extinct language. It is available on both paper and electronic formats, and it can be purchased worldwide from the web.

The real life use of this book is rather limited. The projects it can help on are very specific and geared towards the Anthropological study of the Mayan culture and traditions. It can also be used as a textbook for those who wish to study and keep this dying language alive.

The contents list page has an organized structure. The book begins by giving robust set on historical information about the language, followed by clear instructions on how to understand and read the letters of the language. The dictionary is numbered from pages 1 to 320 following the ABC sequence in Mayan language. For example the word b’aa means “Swim” and each Mayan word is given the unique meaning in English or set of meanings under that word.

People who turn to this dictionary as a source will find it highly useful. It is really helpful to have big portions of the book to explain the complexity of the language. Since the book is rather new, it contains contemporary information and provides resources in addition to just being a dictionary.

El diccionario del cine iberoamericano: España, Portugal y América fue publicado en Madrid el 2011 por la Fundación Autor y la  Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE). Esta obra es la recopilación y documentación de la cinematografía española, americana y portuguesa a través de los tiempos; por ello más 400 colaboradores, entre institutos cinematógrafos, ministerios de cultura y profesionales del arte del cine, analistas, críticos, etc. de distintos países han trabajado en él.  Lo cual indica que esta obra es confiable y autoritaria.

Este diccionario tiene el objetivo de ofrecer información sobre la filmografía de 22 países iberoamericanos mediante sus 8 tomos (volúmenes) “compuesto por 16,000 entradas” en los cuales se encuentra su historia, sus temáticas, sus importantes obras, producciones, culturas,  biografías de actores, directores, guionistas, críticos entre otros; y una colección de películas de 906 títulos en sus otros 2 volúmenes.  A pesar que solo se puede adquirir impreso, es distribuido a nivel internacional mediante envíos de correo y la venta se produce desde España.

Los usos que traductores podrían encontrar es cuando estos tengan que traducir títulos de la filmografía iberoamericana, otro uso seria cuando un traductor tenga que traducir información de un director, crítico, actor, etc.; como también cuando se está traduciendo términos de filmografía.

El significado de un término encontrado en estos volúmenes no es igual al significado encontrado en un diccionario común, ya que una palabra tiene más de 4 hojas de información y todo se relaciona con la cinematografía. Un ejemplo de ello es la palabra “censura”, al buscarlo en un diccionario común este te da la siguiente información: “Crítica o juicio negativo que se hace de algo, especialmente del comportamiento ajeno. Condena”. Mientras que el diccionario del cine iberoamericano: España, Portugal y América habla sobre cómo este tema se difundió en la filmografía de acuerdo a cada cultura y punto de vista de la sociedad, sus puntos positivos y negativos, etc. Este diccionario contiene temas que pueden ser usados y estudiados en la actualidad.

A pesar de tener varios volúmenes, este diccionario viene estructurado en forma alfabética y cada volumen, en su cubierta, indica que temas se pueden encontrar en ella, por ejemplo: en el primer volumen se puede encontrar información desde la A hasta Bolivia mientras que en el quinto volumen se encuentra información desde Lacayo hasta Mollá. Si es que se busca información sobre una persona se tendría que buscar por la primera letra del apellido y si es en el caso de terminología entonces la primera letra de la palabra. La forma de buscar información en este diccionario no difiere de la forma de buscar en otro diccionario común.
