My temple visit
I was finally able to catch a service last Thursday, since they only hold services on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. My temple is called The Self Realization Fellowship. It was founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda with more than 500 temples and meditation centers around the world. Conveniently, there was a fellowship right near out school.
When I first got there they did not allow me to take pictures inside, however, I did sneak in a photo of the outside. The place was huge in my opinion. The service was held in the main room and there were many rows of chairs. In the front there were pictures Paramahansa Yogananda, Krishna, Jesus Christ, Mahavatar Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, and Swami Sri Yukteswar. There is also podium for the speaker of that day.
After the service I took the liberty of looking around. There was a bookstore to purchase writings of Paramahansa Yogananda. In addition there are many other rooms, including other chapels, room for social functions, and family rooms. The whole place gave off a comforting vibe. It also reminded me a lot of a church.
I sat in the back to observe. There were some people in the front. Apparently, more people attend the Sunday service. Again, this reminded me a lot church. I later found out that this temple is a hybrid of hindu customs as well as Christianity. Thus, explaining the picture of Jesus Christ among the others.
I was able to find out the basic info as in who were the people in the pictures and what times would have more people at the service, but I didn’t have time to chat for too long. Therefore, I called up the center the next day. The purpose of the realization center is to advocate spiritual understanding between the East and West, the demonstrate mind over body, soul over mind, and to reveal the oneness of Christianity taught by Jesus Christ and Yoga from Krishna. I found this visit very interesting.
