I’m not much of a poet but after reading a few of the other class’s blog posts I think I will just stick to what I am comfortable with and go along with a story of the rhythm of my week. I had been particularly excited these last few days because of all the good things that seem to be falling into my lap. I for one, have had few exams, little homework, and more time with my friends. But, besides for that, I was fortunate to go to Boston with my father on a business trip, make it to the semi-finals for a business competition, give blood, and get sprayed with water from a taxi driver whom was completely insensitive to the fact that there were puddles of water all over the place. It seems like an exciting week, and I don’t even know where to begin.
Like I’ve said before-my father started his company when he was just 18 years old and it has been a wildly amazing and exciting last 25 years of his business. Because I have a tremendous passion for business my father offered me to go with him on his annual trip to Boston for the Boston Seafood show. The show is the same as any other show; vendors, suppliers, distributors, exporters, importers, manufacturers – all of seafood. My father had meetings with people from Russia, Thailand, Canada, Chile, Germany, Alaska, and Switzerland all in a few hours. I was fortunate to be able to sit in and gain an incredible insight into business and negotiating, where my friends were sitting home watching TV. There are moments in life where you can easily give up something out of pure laziness. My father extended the offer to me to join him, and I stupidly, even thought and considered it for over 24 hours when my immediate answer should have been YES! There is only so much we can learn in college and the insight I gained in that short trip to Boston is something I will never forgot.
Now, on to the next exciting piece of news… Because of the drive I have to start my own company, I took the initiative by joining a New York State wide business plan competition which grants the winners a round of investments from Angel Investors and free mentorship and tutelage from top Business exec’s from IBM and other tech companies. I just received word that I will be proceeding the semi-finals and will compete in NYC on April 3rd (Sorry Professor, I won’t be in class that day…)
Opportunities like this only happen in New York, and I thought I’d be able to connect it all by saying that only in New York will situations seem to fall in your lap as they did for me. The Taxi Driver who was inconsiderate, the blood donation on a truck, the business trip with my father, the competition- It is what makes New York so special. In any other state none of these things would happen. The taxi driver would be nice, or there probably wouldn’t even be taxi drivers. The blood donations wouldn’t be on the side of the street out of a truck, and the New York State business plan competition wouldn’t be relevant (duh…)
I’m excited for all the good things that have been happening and I figured that would be my poem of the night. The story and almost river-flow type of experiences of the last few days.
Great news! Good luck on April 3rd.
