Stacey Zhu

Hello! My name is Stacey Zhu and I am an undergraduate at Baruch college. I am majoring in Psychology and I hope to become a child psychologist. I would like to earn my Phd to become a well-rounded doctor. I have lived in Staten Island for my whole life and volunteered at a daycare there to understand children more. This helped me gain experience in understanding their emotions, talking to them in a level of language they can understand, and effectively communicating with their parents. As I’ve volunteered there for over three years, I can confidently say that I’ve mastered these skills and not only am I passionate about children, but I enjoy working with them because I dedicate hours of my free time there every week. Moreover, I worked at a clinic in Brooklyn to gain experience in a medical setting and get a hang of the very fast paced environment there. I filed paperwork there and it allowed me to utilize skills I’ve learned in college: time-management, writing in a concise manner, and reading comprehension. What I’m learning in college is preparing me for this field by providing me with information to learn that will help me understand new studies being conducted. For example, in my General Psychology class, I am learning how memories are being encoded and memories tied with intense emotions are more likely to be remembered. This can help me understand how intense trauma is for certain people which is relevant to the recent studies psychology professor Margie Lachman did in 2020 on the effects on brain performance from child and adulthood trauma.
