In the technology world, especially startups, women are vastly underrepresented compared to men. You just do not see that many women working as tech CEO’s or even entrepreneurs. But does that mean there are not women trying to break through and innovate in tech? Of course not.
On April 5th 2016, Google Developer Groups and CUNY on Concourse held an event in order to appreciate and inspire women in technology in the Bronx. If you watch the video below, you will find a wide range of women in the tech industry who have faced adversity but have overcome it and lived to tell their tale.
Among the panel you will find Jennifer Martinez, a CUNY Lehman College student who has developed an app to help and save animals. Pet Connect allows animals and potential owners find each other and be happier. It also allows current pet owners to find everything they need for their pet such as, vaccinations, kennels, pet grooming, etc. This app won her and her team first place in a Lehman College hack-a-thon, and she has won second place in a national competition for a similar app for adopting children.
All the women in this event have furthered the advancement for women in the tech and startup communities by breaking down barriers themselves. Their words are very inspirational to those who wish to be in the tech field but just do not think they are good enough.
