Blog Post #2

The Staten Island Hindu Temple is the only one on Staten Island.  It first started in a rented place on Buger Avenue in 1998.  The Hindu community had been calling for a temple and they finally got one.  Eventually, property was bought on Victory Blvd in 2001.  It used to be a small house and was opened in 2006.  The temple’s main deity is Rama who was brought to the temple in 2007.

When I walked into the temple I took my shoes off and went upstairs where the deities are located.  The biggest deity is Rama.  The room with the deities had all the deities located along the wall with room in front for those who wanted to pray to them.  On the third Saturday of every month the temple is open late for Lord Hyyappa.  Every Tuesday is special day for lord Hanuman.  Rama has a special day for him every other Saturday.

I talked to Priest Rangarajan and Dr. Ramachandran Nair who is a volunteer.  Dr. Krshne Urs is the Chairman and Dr. Swamy is the vice chairman for the board of members for the temple.  The only pictures I was allowed to take was of the outside of the temple and right when I walked in.  I couldn’t take any pictures of the deities themselves.
