Fashion models under the age of eighteen will soon be recognized as child performers by a new law signed by governor Andrew M. Cuomo. This would mean that many more models to appear on famous catwalks in the near future would be much older and more fashion designers would want to hire more “seasoned” models. Since there are many limitations to come with younger models now, such as the number of hours they can work, many of them will not be in demand since simply hiring older models would be much easier. This law is tremendously affecting models and fashion designers both. “It’s one of the biggest developments in a century, bringing a whole new group under legal protection”, Susan Scafidi, an academic director of the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham University says. Who knows if this law may soon influence other parts of the world as well.
