I have never applied for a job that required a resume and cover letter, however, my application process for college was fairly similar. My college counselor stressed the idea of showing the college admissions officers what I was like instead of telling them what I was like. I had to demonstrate my personality and potential through stories of my past experiences. She explained how the majority of the applicants would have the same structure and story for their admissions essay. It would have 5 paragraphs and end the concluding paragraph with an explanation of what they learned from their wonderful experience. I had to try to stand out. It was very difficult to mix up the typical essay structure and truly show my voice and personality, but I think this process has prepared me well for what this article is talking about. One must stand out, not just statistically with the best grades etc., but also with a personality that shows potential in their field.
