Different standards for blogs?
Sauchelli on Jun 26th 2010
There are different standards for Blogs. But it also matters the source of the blog and what it is trying to represent. For the NYT to violate someone’s privacy, as I feel they have in the case of Corey Kilgannon, is more upsetting than if it had been by another unknown and unaffiliated blogger. The standards for the NYT weather it be a blog or an article are set higher by it’s readership. While we are interested in knowing what Kilgannon’s room was like, it matters how that knowledge was obtained and if that information could be more accurate and better contextualized. Especially in the matter of a deceased care should be given to the portrait that is painted of that person, for they can’t defend themselves. The family should have been contacted before print. I do think that blogs are and should be a more informal medium where preliminary research and information can be expressed before an in depth article is written on the subject, but lets not throw away journalistic integrity and our ethics for the sake of a blog.

You’re right, the name on the blog host is important, and people do think of the Times differently than they do say OK magazine, but if he didn’t break into the room or mis-report what he saw, there was no invasion of privacy.
It might have been ‘nice’ of him to let the family know, but what he saw is what he saw, and that’s what he reported. Whenever someone is portrayed even slightly negatively there is bound to be some backlash, so the family (not that they’re entirely wrong) is obviously going to be pushing back. It’s their natural position, but not everything about everyone can be tinted the color of roses. Sometimes things are just depressing and ugly, it’s a fact of life.
The better story is not the ones of a rose colored tint, it is the ugly and imperfect life that depicts humanity in it´s complexity. Perhaps the better tale was told, but this does not constitute journalism. And because it did not claim to be, hense being posted on a blog, perhaps it is technically fair play. however, I can´t help but think from the infornmation provided in the article, that the reported over steped moral boundaries, and did not intend to report to the best of his ability. the story was incomplete and he knew it, but he rather post a blog than a proper story. personally i am not a fan of blogs, i dont read them, and im not interested in all reporters opinions all the time. while reporters opinions can help in understanding a situation or aid in telling a story, or granted they seep into stories no matter what, there should be a level of reporting that is maintained no matter what else is woven in. it is the duty of a journalist i think blog or not.

This is amazingly interesting! Great information and it is usually very well written. I will bookmark along with comeback soon.
