At the very least, pay for tuition
Angel Rosario on Jun 13th 2010
I agree with the points already posted previous to my post.
I am in an unpaid internship, and while I love almost everything about it, I feel that I should be getting compensated at the very least, by getting the $885 of tuition for the class covered. This is especially true since this is a required course. The internship that I am in, and many of us are in, is a great experience but it is frustrating to have to essentially pay to work.
Unpaid internships are fine if there is a little bit of hours required and/or it is a part time thing, so a student has an opportunity to get a paid job on the side. But if a student is required to put in a lot of work and a lot of hours, or a student is required to take an internship for a class, there should definitely be compensation. I’m going to be interning until August, and work a lot of hours. Yes, there is a lot of downtime and I am not doing anything that is critical, but every intern is doing something that helps make work easier for many of the staff that is already there full time and getting paid. We should get paid as well.
While I’m sure there will be memorable experiences, I still like and need money as well but I’m not going to be getting any, unfortunately. I don’t have a lot of it in the first place, so getting some money from working is important.

I think this is a great idea. If a certain number of hours are being put in as a productive intern, the cost of the class should be covered by the company. My dad is still unable to grasp the idea of an internship: “So, you’re working…but not being paid. Work…no pay…hmm.”
(P.S. Mets all the way! Congrats to the Yanks, though. Finally caught up to Tampa.)
I think a new system needs to be put in place to reimburse students or some additional financial aid-something!- to help pay for the course. Big companies RARELY if ever, pay their interns. They have the “name factor” so in their minds, that’s payment enough. 🙁
OH my god so true!! I feel like I’m making the paid employee’s job easier! I see the brunt work I get and the stories I get sent out on to cover are sometimes just so cheesy, you know the paid worker feels too good to do it. Hay-sus. What a world.
I’m torn here, believe it or not seeing my strong views on paying people when they do work that makes you money.
I actually see the reason for still having to pay tuition, and it’s not the company’s responsibility.
Don’t get me wrong, it irks me bad. When I had to pay, out of my own pocket I might add, the 800 something dollars for this class, I was burnt. And when you add the idea of not getting paid it hurts even more.
However, we pay for all our other classes the same rate, and no one is responsible for that either. Even though it is in a real company, the tuition is the school and that falls on us. In that respect, this is a class, not a job.
That still doesn’t make it any easier or softer to shell out that much money to work for someone.
I agree. Even if they didn’t cover the ENTIRE course, anything would be helpful. I’m sure they could figure out a way to write it off on their taxes. I could really use help getting Baruch’s bursar off my back.
Wonderful Share! An interesting discussion is value comment. I believe that you must publish much more on this subject, it might not become a taboo subject matter but generally men and women are not enough to speak on these types of topics. Towards the up coming. Cheers
