Mirrors, Windows, and Doors
Inter-Cultural Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Friday, April 8, 2022, 1:00-3:00pm

THANK YOU to everyone in the Baruch Community and across CUNY who attended our event. It was great sharing space with you. If you were unable to join us for the Teach-In the recording is available  here

Check out the Resource Guide for students and faculty under the Resources Tab of this website.

Here are slides that Dr. Torres shared and a link to the nationally traveling exhibition and project that she co-created entitled, RACE: Are we so different? And here are the slides that the TfCS team shared.

THIS EVENT HAS PASSED.

Join members of the Baruch Community on Friday, April 8, 2022, 1:00-3:00pm on Zoom, as we explore inter-cultural approaches to teaching and learning, grounded in culturally-responsive and culturally-sustaining pedagogies. Learn how to better support students from a variety of backgrounds (e.g., ethnicities, races, religions, cultures), including immigrants, international students, and multilingual students, using a strengths rather than deficits framework.

Our theme of Mirrors, Windows, and Doors reflects the approach of the multiple aspects of inter-cultural connections, including self-reflection (mirrors), learning about the perspective of others (windows), and bridging differences to make meaningful connections (doors). We invite you to explore these aspects with us.

This event will include a student-facilitated conversation with Dr. Arlene Torres, Associate Professor in Africana and Puerto Rican/Latino Studies at Hunter College, and a workshop facilitated by educators from Baruch’s Tools for Clear Speech.

During this teach-in, faculty will have a chance to workshop some of their teaching material and develop specific strategies to implement into the classroom.

The event is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and will be led by Dr. Anna D’Souza, the Provost Innovation Fellow for Inclusive Teaching and Associate Professor at the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. Please contact anna.dsouza@baruch.cuny.edu with questions.
