Available Software on BCTC Labs

The Baruch Computing Technology Labs all over campus are not only for completing homework, creating class presentations, and surfing on social media, but also are equipped with programs ranging from the simple calculator app to more advanced programs such as video editing. You might not use these programs in your course work, but Baruch Computing and Technology Center took further steps to provide students a platform to learn and polish their skills.

Like every passionate student, if you are interested in exploring these applications, which includes various tools of financial markets, application development, languages and programming software, feel free to check the BCTC Student Resources Home page. Dell OptiPlex and Apple Macintosh workstations provide numerous programs at your fingertips. For instance, if you are a Business student you have the convenience to specialize in several programs demanded by the market. As a Finance major, if I am interested in collecting, managing, and analyzing data, I can use ArcGIS (mapping software). This software lets users collect data on geographic information which can be interpreted according to the subject of the assignment. As mentioned in the previous blog entry, Statistical Analysis System (aka SAS software) is also available in BCTC labs to interpret the coursework of Econometrics, Finance, and Real Estate. This helps students better understand the concepts of financial markets. Another great tool available for Baruch students is MATLAB. MATLAB is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and programing language which allows users to manipulate matrix and plot the data functions and implementation of algorithms. It is also used in various fields of engineering, science and economics.

Moving forward, the long list of programs offered to Baruch Students is available to all students, including both undergrad and graduate students. Another program available is Wolfram Mathmetica, where you can apply the applications of mathematics courses. This program is also used in scientific, engineering, mathematical and computing fields.

Now if you are wondering if these programs are not influential for you because you are a Communications major, or maybe because you are interested in publishing, editing, graphics, music, and gaming then check out the Apple Macintosh systems. These machines are equipped with Apple Final Cut Pro Studio, which includes Color, Compressor, Dreamweaver, DVD Studio Pro, Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Sound track Pro. This set of applications will allow you to create, edit, and publish graphics, sound tracks, videos and many more. Furthermore, Adobe Creative Suite is also available in both Dell OptiPlex and Apple Macintosh workstations, where you have an opportunity to convert images in Photoshop and create drawings in Illustrator. InDesign is also available, where you can create posters, flyers, newspapers and much more.

The tools provided by Baruch Computing and Technology Center on lab computers is an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with numerous professional programs, development tools, languages like C++ and many more at no cost.
