I just checked all of the recommended jobs at the Starr Search website. Most of the ads I opened are typically from employers looking for candidates proficient in field related software programs. Frankly speaking, I have a basic idea and understanding of these programs, but do not really know how to use them. So, I decided to try and buy some software and start learning on my own. Honestly, these programs are out of reach for a typical student on a budget.
I attempted to download the application from Google by searching “Free download”, but Google said, “If you are a Baruch College student than, go to your college website, you will find everything for free.” THAT’S RIGHT! 😉
Baruch Computing and Technology Center provide numerous specialized programs for free and downloadable to your personal devices. First and foremost is the Microsoft Office Suite. The Microsoft Office bundle includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access and Publisher. You can install the Office Suite on your personal laptops, smartphones, and tablets, allowing up to 5 devices. All you need is an active Baruch College email address and download instructions are given to you HERE.
Second is the CIS Society’s Dreamspark Software Library. This software library allows Baruch College students to download almost 200 programs including Database, Development Tools, Operating Systems, Web/Multimedia Development tools and many more. The Databases include MS Access, SQL Server, and LightSwitch, where Development tools are loaded with Visual Studio, Kodu Game Lab, XNA Game Studio, Embedded CE, Windows Mobile and more. Additionally, the Operating system category lets students download a free copy of Windows 7, Windows 8, Window Server, etc. Even Windows 10 Preview!
To download from the CIS Society’s Dreamspark Library, you are required to be enrolled in any CIS course or have already passed a CIS course with at least a C grade or better.Requests can be made at the BCTC Help Desk.
That’s not all! BCTC has a lot more to offer. Also available is software distribution for certain courses. One of my favorite programs is Statistical Analysis System (aka SAS Software). This program is distributed to statistic students, which empowers students to understand how to use the application of course. This software provides the real world experience of Finance, Econometrics and Real Estate field professionals.
Another important application available for Baruch students is the VMware Academic Program. VMware is a virtual PC for Mac, and enables Mac users to run Microsoft Windows on their Macintosh. This allows students to run all the necessary Windows programs they may need right on their Mac.
The downloadable programs list for students consists of many specialized programs, giving them the opportunity to enhance their skills. Students can view other technology resources HERE.
