It’s the time of year in which millions of students live their entire lives hoping and dreaming to achieve: College Graduation. Every year individuals of high rank, notoriety or reliability are invited to provide a keynote or commencement speech to graduates from schools across the world. In their speeches, they seek to provide insight on what lies ahead as young people forge ahead in their careers both professionally and personally, and they even guide some of those graduates into making decisions they may not have thought as an option.

Army Strong, College Smart

Manhattan born Michael Hill, 28, just retired from the United States Army. After spending three years based in Hawaii, he’s now looking to continue his education in the field of mechanical engineering at the New York City College of Technology (City Tech). In fact, he’s also received employment interest from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).

When Math, Chemistry and Physics are subjects in which one excels, it’s hard to imagine a better career plan than electrical engineering for Sidy Sow, 25, a Guinea native who recently graduated from LaGuardia Community College (LCC) and is in the process of applying for a transfer to The City College of New York. In both instances, his major is electrical engineering.

When graduating from high school at age 21, Ecuadorian born Jose Chaca didn’t initially know what he wanted to do with himself. Now 24, Chaca currently finds life after high school a rewarding experience after enrolling at Hostos Community College majoring in Dental Hygiene, which he decided to pursue after recalling a conversation he once had with a dentist during his younger years.

Express to Success: A Story of Perseverance

Albanian born Jonela Hasani, 33, is a graduate of Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day High School (MCNDHS). Currently completing her final semester at Alfred University, as part of the Masters in Education Program, with a concentration on School Counseling, Ms. Hasani emigrated to the United States at the age of 18. Although she had already graduated high school in her home country, her lack of proficiency in English hindered her in moving ahead. After speaking with someone she had befriended shortly after her arrival to the U.S., Ms. Hasani discovered MCNDHS when she was 19.
