The connection between George Floyd’s death and so many other ignored instances of police brutality throughout the world created the domino effect of change. Americans are blind to it, but we really are the center of the world. Things that happen in America that we seem to think only impacts us citizens impacts other countries in big ways. On a trip to South Korea, I’ve seen so many headlines about American politics and events. Hearing the podcast affirmed this; cries of change to police brutality have rippled across the world because of how George Floyd’s death caused America to wake up. I was surprised to hear that the movement to end police brutality had spread to places like New Zealand. The movement in New Zealand was especially inspiring and interesting because unlike America, New Zealand doesn’t have many armed officers, and they are fighting for officers to stay unarmed. New Zealand showed that unarming the police is bringing them in the right direction, and America should take notice. Another inspiring story was told by a woman from Kenya. Kenya is a place we don’t hear about often, but it was shocking to know that the same kind of police brutality and suppression of voice happens there too––in places we don’t expect. All of these groups in different nations have connected themselves to the BLM movement because it is their way of bringing the fight to end police brutality to their own countries. We have seen this domino effect of change within societies so many times before; humans are band-wagon beings––we follow others like sheep––and the same can be said for societies as a whole. The American Revolution was one of the greatest inspirational events in history, inspiring the French revolution, revolutions in South America, and the end of an imperial age. Before the American Revolution, westernization was spreading across empires like wildfire, inspiring an age of innovation and enlightenment.

I think it is interesting that people do not realize how America is center stage and we must set an example. It is important to embrace this and use any platform to demand change because anyone can create the domino affect and help make the world a better place. When you said people follow others like sheep I was reminded of the podcast “The Influence You Have.” People are so easily influenced and instead of taking advantage of that, we should try to lead people in the right direction.
Good connection, ideas and ideologies spread rapidly and are easily attachable for massive change.
I thought it was interesting how you stated that American politics, way of life, and more are usually the blueprint and have a huge influence on the rest of the world. Having lived overseas for a long period of time I completely agree with that statement. I think with George it made it even more prevalent because it was a tragedy that so many people could relate too.
