Trevor Noah discusses,on his daily show, how society is a contract. He mentions how in order for a society to work there needs to be a contract between the members of society. An example of this can be laws and how we follow laws as part of our contract to American society. But, what happens when that contract is broken? Are society members expected to continue to follow these rules even when the other side isn’t holding up their end of the bargain. Noah argues that we cannot view events that occur in society as individual events, but rather as interconnected sequences of events. A full citizen can be described as someone who follows the rules of the society, while also having society follow the rules that it promises to them. To be a true full citizen you cannot have one without the other.

James Baldwin project is about the lives of Malcom X, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Medger Evans. He chose these individuals because they are three of the most famous and influential civil rights activists. Baldwin never finished his book sparking Raoul Peck to produce the Documentary “I am Not Your Negro.” The film was a very powerful piece. It showed the history of racism and how African Americans have been mistreated for centuries. The documentary made me think that in the future I have to do more in order to make sure that there is true peace and unity for all the people living in America. My biggest takeaway is how prevalent racism throughout the 1900’s. It wasn’t just the mobs that rallied to keep schools segregated, which turns my stomach, it was the television shows that portrayed white men as if they are superior to the “Negro”. We have allowed racism to poison our society for too long and we must all commit, moving forward, to make sure that we treat everyone fairly and dawn a new era of peace and love.

I like your definition of a full citizen, one who upholds the social contract with the condition that society is also playing its part in protecting its citizens and providing all with the same rights. I definitely agree that we have let racism prevail and “poison” our society as you put it. The small steps towards improvement in the last decades just aren’t enough as shown by recent events. We all need to participate in the fight for equal rights.

Hi Isaac, I was left with the same feeling of sickness in my stomach while watching certain scenes of the movie as well. Not only did the television shows try to continue the idea that the whites were superior, they also tried to use their black actors to appease the white population. Blatant racism was so normalized in their society, but honestly, it doesn’t feel any different from how it feels now. So I definitely agree with your last sentence because racism has hurt society for too long, and we should all work our hardest to rid society of so much hatred.
