My first semester of college, like many others, is going to be an unusual one.  Not only do we have to make the transition from high school to college, but also while fully online.  In this class, I hope to improve my writing skills: specifically to improve my vocabulary and become less repetitive in my writing.  Often, I find myself using the same word in sequential sentences while attempting to make a point.  I know I have been doing it, but I am unsure of how to fix it.  I do not see any obstacles to performing well academically, other than being unfamiliar with college classes and work.  Perhaps the biggest adjustment will be the amount of independent work required.  I understand college classes meet much less frequently than high school classes and require more solo work and studying.  This is especially true with virtual classes.  While I consider myself someone who works better independently, this will still be a major adjustment for me.  Also, my coursework is also different this semester than it has been from all four years of high school.  For the first time in my academic career, I am not taking a math or science class and I am taking an art class for the first time since 8th grade.  I will also be studying subjects I never have before (ex. Sociology).  Although this is an unusual, it is certainly a welcome change.

In my first week, I have found that having more time actually makes time management more important.  Having more time leads me to hold off on doing assignments, which can be a problem and I am trying to avoid that trap.  While I have had much free time in the first week of classes, I know I will become busier.  During my time at Baruch, I will be running cross country in the fall and be a member of (hopefully) two clubs.  I hope to develop a schedule before academics and extracirriculars are active.

    Hi Ishaan,

You are certainly right that time management is going to be the most important factor in your success in college. I recommend you start making a fairly detailed weekly schedule with due dates and start dates so that you can break your assignments into smaller items to focus on leading up to the due date. You can do this in Excel or Google sheets, or else through an app like https://www.mystudylife.com/. Good luck this semester!
