In the article “Asain Americans are still caught in the Trap of the “Model Minority” Stereotype by Thiet Thanh Nguyen there is the main theme that Asain Americans are held to a higher standard because of the socio-economical success that Asain Americans and Asain immigrants have had in the capitalistic nation of America. In the article, the author indicates how that holding an individual to the standards of society is very dangerous. I do agree with the author on this argument because it is difficult and wrong to compare anyone to anyone else, furthermore, it is even more difficult to compare an individual to the likes of a society. Also, it creates another pressure for Asain Americans who already face their own source of injustices to outperform other people in society. Painting the idea of a model minority group proves to be a form of racism for other minority groups. It is simply unfair to compare certain groups with other groups mainly because there have been different circumstances for each group within American history. Using this idea of the Model Minority group serves as a way to disprove the reasons why Black and Hispanics are lower on the socio-economic scale than whites.  Because Asians are a minority group and have faced racism similar to any other racial group in America it is easy to point at the lower racial groups and claim that they may not be working as hard since Asain Americans have risen to a higher economical status.

This essay challenges my view on the economic success of all racial groups because it is not as known that Asain Americans are of higher economic status than most. To me, it proves that money sees no color.  I also do not agree with the author when he states that the end of Asain American discrimination dies when capitalism dies because other forms of economic structures prove to be much more discriminatory than capitalism.

Hi Zakk, although I do agree that there are other forms of economic structures that are much more discriminatory than capitalism, I don’t think that’s the point of this essay. I think that the author specifically said capitalism because he wanted to highlight how the discrimination against Asian Americans will never end because capitalism in America will never end. A lot of Asians migrate to America due to the other forms of economic structures that you mentioned because capitalism promises opportunities for everyone. If capitalism grants this to everyone, there really should be no racial divisions because, like you said, money sees no color.
