In the article “To Fight the Coronavirus, You Need an Army”, author Ricardo Nuila discusses how Texas handled the spike in corona cases once reopened. The only issue Texas faced was the scarcity of I.C.U nurses compared to the amount of patients either diagnosed with the coronavirus or any other sickness. Unlike other countries/states, Texas didn’t have a shortage of supplies nor needed more space to provide for any potential patients. To avoid growing the amount of corona patients, like other states Texas implemented a social distancing with masks rule, where Texans are required to wear a mask outside while staying 6 feet apart from other each other.
Social distancing with masks seems like a great tactic in order to minimize the risk of catching COVID-19, but to some people this isn’t the best way to fight the virus. Some people think of this as a deprivation of their rights, claiming that wearing a mask restricts their ability to breathe. Thus, some people choosing not to wear a mask during an airborne pandemic, increasing the risk of getting the corona not only for them but for those around them. It’s understandable that some may not choose to wear a mask, it’s a nuisance not being able to breathe properly when we should be out enjoying this summer. But if it’s required to steer clear from getting the virus, then to selfishly put others at risk because you believe it’s a hinderance to your rights is ethically and morally wrong.
In the podcast “Hotel Corona”, a hotel in Jerusalem sheltered corona patients from different religious backgrounds, where presumably each groups of people would isolate from each other due to their differences. However, that was different once people got together for comedian Noam Eliassi’s show. They all shared their laughs to the same jokes, holding no grudges against each other, which surprised the comedian because of how uncommon this scene was. This shows that although we each have different cultures, we all live in the same world during the same pandemic, and we can all share a laugh on the same things.
