I have never been the best writer, I am much more of a math person. Going into this semester, I hope to improve my writing more than anything. It’s always been my weakest skill. I am most looking forward to learning about the research component of our essays, as I know it will most likely be one of the most important skills I will acquire out of this course as well to overall become a better writer. As my instructor, I hope that I could come to you about my papers beforehand or with a draft as well as the writing center for guidance. I like to think I take criticism well and I would really appreciate any and all advice. This semester is my first semester at college, let alone Baruch. Its been a tiny bit overwhelming but I have been managing by reaching out to fellow classmates about the work. A planner or keeping things written down/stored somewhere has also helped to organize and manage my time. I have made sure to dedicate a portion of my time to a different class everyday. That was much easier to say then to do this week. It’s been a really weird transition from summer and quarantine to college classes. There is much more expectations and independence that it’s shocking. That is so far the biggest obstacle I have had to deal with going into my second week of classes. Reaching out for help has never been something I have liked to do, but it is something I have found myself consistently doing because otherwise I end up lost. Not to mention these classes have been online, which wasn’t the worse thing in the world. It feels a lot more manageable from my computer then in person. It is a little harder to stay focused and to decipher the writing during the lectures but staying on top of assignments has been a lot easier because of the transition to online work. I guess I went on a bit of a rant but it felt great to dump all this here, and I hope to use these prompts to continue to do so.

Just your first sentence made me think. What makes it that certain people are better at different things. You can take two toddlers, raise them in the same enviroment, yet some how one would be better at math and the other at writing. I would consider myself being better at writing, that’s why I started working on my math skills recently. Slowly but surley, I will succeed and hope you do to at writing.
Hey Juan i relate to you the most when it comes to feeling a little overwhelmed with just the whole idea of college, for sure coming into this semester I did some soul searching just because I think for all of us it feels like we got to this point in our life so fast. I can join you in that sense of online school making it a little easier as we aren’t presented with every aspect of college at once and being at home makes things much more comfortable.
We’re opposites when it comes to math, but i hope we can help eachother when it comes to having trouble.I also agree with it being a sudden change from summer and quarantine to having college classes.I already notice the difference between high school and college when it comes to being independent. There are no reminders or someone to tell you when something is due,you have to be responsible. Its scary but also exciting.
I am definitely a math person as well. Math is so easy as long as you understand it, there’s always a set right answer. In writing you could think you’re right and end up being completely wrong and being so far off so it scares me. Hopefully we can get through it!
I am not the best at math, I wish I had your brain. For me, Math is so complex and honestly makes my brain hurts. I hate that there is always a set answer because I just feel like in the grand scheme of things that’s is so surface level, but that might be because I just don’t like math.
Hi Juan,
I understand struggling with the transition from high school to college in terms of the newfound independence and also the new need to manage your own time. You have the right idea, keeping a planner, and i suggest you really dedicate to using it each week to stay on top of assignments. I also recommend that you add “start work” dates in addition to “due dates” for larger assignments, so you have enough time to work on big projects at your own pace and deadlines don’t seem to come out of nowhere.
It’s also good that you are learning to ask for help: this is going to be a crucial skill throughout your college career, and is truly a sign of strength and motivation from teachers’ perspectives.
