The label model minority refers to the cultural expectation placed on Asian Americans as a group and that each individual will be wealthy, smart and abiding. They are painted in this light based on stereotypes which pose a threat to not only other groups of minorities but the Asian minority as well. With the stereotype of Asian Americans being perfect, it adds a burden for them to maintain that image. It also gives people that feed into the label the justification to say something like “If they can do it, so can you” to other minorities. That way of thinking just slows adds more difficulty when it comes to what minorities fight for. The label is spoken about in NY Magazine in which it gives the generalization of Asian Americans maintaining a solid two parent family structure, and placing enormous emphasis on education and hard work which contributes to their success. The generalization is used to try to support that other minorities can follow them and it would give them the same results, which downplays the struggles of those other minority groups.
When Nguyen writes that “the end of Asian Americans only happens with the end of racism and capitalism.”he is saying that there is always going to be a separation when it comes to Americans. There are many instances of racism towards Asians, and in order to try to be accepted by society they act more ‘white’. By acting this way, they can sometimes avoid certain things that other minorities have to face.
Minority Groups are placed into somewhat of a caste system that tries to indicate which groups are better than another. However each group faces their own problems and shouldn’t be separated. Each group wants to fight the racism that targets them.
Thank you for clarifying what Nguyen says in that quote because what she was saying was confusing, I don’t say this to take away from her message. However, I wonder if the confusion stems from varying differences in terms of these stereotypes that are forced upon us.
