The article “paradoxes of American Individualism” argues that America has contradicting popular beliefs. one being the anti-individualistic view when it comes to religion and individual morals but the other view that is based around individual decisions and choosing what you want to do. The contradiction states that an individual can choose to do whatever they want but when they do choose what they want to do they have to be 100% invested.
The problem with the model of individualism that was explored in the poem ” Let America be America again ” by Langston Hughes is that the freedoms that are offered with America’s model of individualism can only be experienced by the rich and wealthy white. But in the terms of the unprivileged people the freedom that is what’s promise in america are a far dream they can only hope to receive. The Problem expands beyond that when it is taken into consideration that it is the unprivileged people that deserve that freedom the most because of the hard work and sweat they put in to make this land of freedom as great as it is. The people who have dreamed of the freedoms the most, been loyal to the country the most, and have sung the songs detailing the freedom the most are the ones that never get to live out those freedoms.
In the poem “America” Walt Whitman is most likely talking to anyone that is looking towards america as the land of the free which can provide opportunities to all. The poem talks about all the people in America and it is Speaking for everyone, Leaving no one out of what it describes. That as long as Earth exists and Freedom exists anyone can have that freedom in America, these opportunities are unaffected by time and will always be available for everyone.
I definitely agree with you point on how the people who have dreamed of the freedoms the most, etc. are the ones that never get to live them out. People come here from all over the world with such high hopes and they get crushed.
I like that you say as long as Earth exists and Freedom exists anyone can have that freedom in America, because there are a lot of people out there trying to come here and be free and also looking for these opportunities to reach their American dream.
I like your insight on Walt Whitman’s poem. I thought it was interesting as well, considering that even though Whitman speaks highly of America, he definitely did not account for the rights of ALL citizens during his time.
