I have never really been superb at writing mainly due to my lack of creativity and the difficulties of putting my thoughts into words. I personally think I am more of a STEM student with interests in science and technology therefore being in an English class never really excited me. However, this semester I am most looking forward to learning how to improve my writing and to enjoy learning English.
I think a potential obstacle for me this semester is feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of work/activities going on in my life currently. Having to balance between school, work, and maintaining my physical/mental health is extremely draining. There are plenty of days where I feel like giving up and just skipping things and/or leaving it to the last possible moment and I know it’s a really bad habit which I am trying to fix. Being active at the gym recently really helped me in boosting my productivity and my physical/mental health. It helped me create day by day schedules on Google Calendar which I follow daily while also helping me increase my confidence and gives me the energy to get through my hectic day.
It has honestly been a decent amount of time since I wrote a paper/took a English course therefore I hope through Prof Gordon’s guidance and criticism from my peers that I can come out from this course a way better writer than before. I am excited to get back to learning and I look forward to utilizing all the great resources available to me such as the writing center and would love to hear any feedback.
Hi Kevin,
I think it’s great that you are focusing some of your energy on maintaing physical and mental health—without these, we can’t function at all, let alone thrive. So good for you. I would suggest, if you aren’t doing this already, to actually schedule those things into your google calendar along with your school work, so let’s say you write “work on sociology reading 1-2 pm” maybe you could add “break—take a walk 2-2:45” or something, so that it’s right in front of you and becomes an equal priority to the school assignment.
Hopefully the range of readings/viewings/and listenings on our schedule this term will reawaken your interest in English, or at least broaden your perspective in some way.
