The article talks and analyzes a point that is really never talked about enough. That stereotypes especially those targeted towards Asian Americans no matter how positive they claim to be are still stereotypes. It’s not something to be flattered by, by any means because it is grouping and dividing just like any other stereotype. Stereotypes all in all are bad, just because Asians are identified as the model minority and stereotyped “positively “, doesn’t excuse the racist undertones and racism they face. It’s still brings about division and like the article mentions “creates inequality for all”. Not only is that stereotype is not one that is flattering but it also comes from a place that is inherently racist and ignorant. The stereotype of being a model minority when it comes to Asian assumes that all Asian often times are Chinese .On top of that because they are seen as the model minority it makes them feel as though the racism that they experience isn’t that bad when in reality all forms of racism is bad. That stereotype is used to downplay the racism against Asians .We see this even in the article where the author often times downplay the racism that she has experienced throughout her youth or even throughout her entire life labeling it as “low level racism”. She shouldn’t have to do that by any means, what she experienced was wrong and her feelings are valid. It was racism, however she feels the need to clarify that it was “low-level racism” when in reality it was just racist. It was bad but she words it so that other Americans who have experienced racism in other forms don’t feel offended. Which again goes back to what she was writing about from the very beginning as to why receiving the model minority stereotype is dangerous because it then makes you feel as though your experiences in terms of inequality isn’t valid or isn’t as strong and doesn’t deserve the support and conversation it does in order for it to change. We often do not hear about the racism that the Asian American community or just the Asian community faces in America. That is because of the downplay and this idea of Asian Americans or Asians being the model minority. They are aware that they are stereotyped in a ” positive light” so they often do not talk about what they face within their communities because of this fear that it will be received negatively and as less then. It’s also not a fear but sometimes a sad reality.

I like the point you bring up about how even though the stereotypes of Asian Americans and their label of “model minority” are supposed to positive, they were created with an inherently negative attitude towards Asian Americans, so these titles are ultimately negative and harmful. Since these labels have created so much divide amongst minority groups and added to the racism and discrimination faced by Asian Americans, I am left to wonder if exterminating these labels, and possibly creating new titles with attitudes enforcing equality amongst all races, would be beneficial to combating the racism and discrimination minority groups face as well as to unifying the minority groups.
