Implicit bias is the belief that everyone has bias without them being conscious about it, In “The Air We Breathe: Implicit Bias And Police Shootings” podcast it explores this theory within the racial injustice that occours in the world. The conclusion that is made is that Implicit bias is active when people are not thinking about their actions or do not have time to think about their actions, police officers find themselves in stressful situations that might lend itself to the possibility that implicit bias will take over. what this tells us is that the way to avoid bias and to fight it is to give time to our decision and think about what we are going to do, In the instance of police officer it’s about training officers on giving themselves even a split second more to think about their actions before they inact them. This answer to implicit bias found in the podcast shares similarity to the main point Nita Mosby was making in her ted talk “Want a more just world? Be an unlikely ally” , Mosby made the point that to fight against injustice people need to start thinking for themselves and become the people to stand up or speakout instead of sitting back and letting these injustices happen. To give more time to think about what you are really doing when being a bystander in these situations, you are letting injustice continue within your community even if it effects you or not. Both examples end with the same conclusion that to end injustice and this bias people have there needs to be a larger effort to think about what we are doing with our actions and how this will effect the injustice happening around us.
The ideas presented in these examples put into perspective the range in which we as people could add to the problem of racial injustice. Personally I’ve made my decisions to stand against injustice when it happens infront of me but going foward I will make it more of a habit to take time to think about what I am doing to see if I may be mistakingly acting with implicit bias in anyway so that I may start challenging that unconsious bias.
This is true, the worst thing people can do is stand by and watch these injustices happen. We can’t let these things happen, even if they don’t affect us directly.
I think its important for everyone to challenge their own implicit biases. It becomes a problem when we act on our negative implicit biases, but it is very helpful when you begin to become more conscious of these subtle biases.
