Blog Post #8

In the Ted talk, “Want a more just world? Be an unlikely ally”, the speaker talks about a major issue in the world. This issue, is how people tend to stay silent or complicit when others suffer or experience hardships. As I’ve mentioned in a few previous blog posts, I feel that a lot of conflicts could be easily treated if people could set aside their differences and work towards a common good. And in addition to this idea, its crucial that people stick up for one another. I think the biggest takeaway for me, was when the speaker recalled how her 5th grade teacher taught her “Justice requires an accomplice.” In the podcast, “The Air We Breathe: Implicit Bias And Police Shootings”, the host describes how strong implicit biases can be in our lives. For me, the biggest takeaway is that implicit bias does not exactly correlate to racism, or other negative traits. Its important to understand the fact that everyone has implicit bias, and that in the case for police, its difficult to judge whether or not a police shooting was influenced by race. However, implicit biases is something that also heavily impacts how the individual mind connects to society. Quoting Hillary Clinton, “I think implicit bias is a problem for everyone, not just police. I think unfortunately too many of us in our great country jump to conclusions about each other.”

I think that the two pieces of media involved in today’s blog post do not shift my thinking at all. I try my best to consider and reflect upon my own implicit biases, as well as trying to decide whether someone is unintentionally showing theirs. I feel more importantly, when people involve themselves in social issues I may not agree with, I won’t involve myself. However, I will not reject the fact that people have the right to protest whatever they would like. This I feel, is the most important thing to practice especially in today’s social climate; respect for one another’s opinions.

  1. I understand with what you say of not being involved in social injustice. It is best for people who are shy to not speak out about these issues, but at the very least, you speak on these issues alone and what you stand by on them. Only the people who are brave should be involved with social injustice so that we can have clear society on what they are clearly
    speaking out about.
