The purpose of society based on a social contract is to make sure it runs correctly. Trevor Noah says that in order to function in society, one must be a part of this contract. The contract includes topics such as laws and the people who enforce these laws, and the people who are protected by the laws. However, in the murder of George Floyd, Noah says that the contract is broken. How can the people who are meant to enforce the laws and protect the people doing the exact opposite? This is why rioting and looting began, due to the fact that if the law enforcement doesn’t hold up the contract, why should the people? A full citizen in society is one who always fallows the social contract, no matter what happens.

James Baldwin’s project was a look into the lives of Malcolm X, Medgar Evans, and Martin Luther King Jr.. He chose to discuss the lives of these three men because they were men who stood up and fought for their rights, and didn’t let anyone get in their way. The three of them led some of the largest charges against racism, and were in turn killed for their efforts. They gave their lives for this cause, a tragic but heroic ending.

I found this film very interesting, but hard to watch at times. It was only 60-70 years ago when people were still extremely racist, comparing integration to a sin that Jesus would look down on. It was sickening to see the rallies against integration, and how much the white people in the clips were against it. There were also points in the documentary when Baldwin is having a good day, and then he hears the news about either X, Evans, or King being killed. You could hear the genuine sadness and anger that was building up in him, and these moments were very powerful. My biggest takeaway from this film is that these three men provided an example, of how we should act when there’s something we truly believe in. These three men fought long and hard, and although they didn’t live to see 40, they made impacts that will last forever.

  1. Your last line is very important. “They made impacts that will last forever.” It makes sense because all these years later everything they spoke of is still relevant and will be relevant forever regardless of their application. The idea of liberty is universally eternal.

  2. The comment that one woman made about God forgiving adultery and murder but cursing those who integrate is one that has been playing in my head since hearing it. It is really horrifying and upsetting to think that some people still have this sort of mindset.
